Just a few days ago, me and these kids on my bus were talking about Pumpkin Pie verses SweetPotato Pie. I was white and never tasted sweet potato pie, and they were black and never had pumpkin pie. I think it is just a difference in the culture.

The taste has a sweet yet spicy taste of it. Very natural, and sweetbut not over powering. I love pumpkin pie. I would just tell you to buy one, and not cook one. It is just better to do it if it is your first time. Maybe go to a store and try a peice. I love it.

If you do make pumpkin pies, you use the small pumpkins, notthe ones you use to carve jack o lanters. Or bie pumpkin pei mix in the can.

good luck and I hope you like it.

Pumpkin pie varies by what ingredients you use. If you ask me, most canned pumkin pie mixes taste like slime. I hate them. I use actual pumkins when I make pies. It's ok to use the medium sized pumpkins, but I agree that the LARGE ones are bad.

If you use real pumkins, first scoop the pumkin like you would for a jack-o-lantern. Throw all those nasty old guts straight in the trash. Then slice the pumpkin into crescents and bake them. Then you will remove the skins and the hard baked out area. The golden inside is now soft and tender and should be EASILY mashed, not stringy at all. Just add your own ingredients from there according to your recipe. Remember that the canned crud often has some spices and other ingredients already in it, so be sure to get a recipe for REAL pumkin pie, not a crap in a can pie.

Oh, and pumkin pie is BEST (ie, only good) when served with whipped cream.

To me, pumpkin tastes like acorn /hubbard squash. It is smooth, bland and golden brown in color. The good flavor comes from the spices that you add to it. Then it tastes kinda like gingerbread. Like squash, it all depends what you do to it. In pie, it is not overly sweet just more sweetly spicy! Have fun and enjoy. top your pie with whipped cream! Yum.
Here's a recipe you might enjoy

Slimy and stringy and tastes like squash. It's okay in pumkin pie because of all the spices and the way it's cooked so you hardly recognize it. Otherwise I wouldn't eat it at all but I don't like squash in general. If you like squash maybe it's edible.

With all the ingredients added together, it tastes very much like gingerbread (at least to me) or even like carrot cake.
