Black lights work great for finding urine stains! If you can't find a reasonably priced hand-held unit you can get one at http://www.mscdirect.com. Someone from my work purchased one through this company (we deal with them all the time) for less than $20).
A good cleaner which really helps get rid of stains and odors is Nature's Miracle. You can even use it to get rid of grass stains, blood stains, in the wash, etc. You can purchase it at any pet store or online.
I've had to do the black light & Nature's Miracle bit because my dog "is" housebroken but has, what I think is a nervous bladder and he is constantly lifting his leg on everything even when there's nothing left in his bladder. He does this inside and out. Once he figured out he was a boy and could lift his leg instead of squatting (that was shortly after he turned 2) then it was like all heck breaking loose.
But the black light & Nature's Miracle worked for me and should work for you as well.
Good luck!

I would recommend renting a carpet cleaner and using a product called Natures Miracle (instead of shampoo), the label has the dilution of the product to the amount of water, just follow those directions and do your entire carpet. The product does work enzymatically, so therefore after your carpet dries you will smell the urine and then not-this is a sign that the product is working. The black lights do work, what I would do is purchase a black light after the initial shampoo to make sure you got all of the spots. Good Luck.

two things that work awesome, Nature's miracle and Resolve Pet/Stain remover. I will rent a steam cleaner and put both products in the water bin to put on the carpet and urine smell is gone as soon as the carpet dries. I will spot clean with both also and then use it for the whole carpet. Febreeze is excellent as it kills the odor in the air. I've had a many puppies and this works well. good luck
this is the best alternative to removing carpet which can be soooo costly.

URINE GONE! It's the absolute best thing for ridding urine stains and smell because it doesn't just hide the smell temporarily like other cleaners do but it actually dissolves the ammonia in the urine by breaking up and actually getting rid of it. I've heard Nature's Miracle works well but haven't used it. Have used Urine Gone for cat and dog urine and it works wonders, saved my brand new carpet!

Yes, a black light can help, but a nose can be just as effective.
Obviously the best answer would have been to make sure the dog went outside. Yes, that is possible.
There are a number of commercial products which can “remove” the odor.” Go to your local PetCo or PetSmart and talk to them about the problem. If they are too distant, go to your vet and ask them and they will likely have the correct product.
If you have wood floor you may want to take to a local floorer and they will likely have a commercial product to address the problem. Carpeting can be a problem and in the worse cases must be replaced. Cats can cause such a removal. If you do replace carpeting you might consider replacing it with large rugs (nearly the size of the room) and they can be removed to a commercial cleaner.
If you ever find yourself in this situation again, train the puppy to go outside. Its not difficult to do and if you have a problem with it, go to a local trainer.

Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, it is the best. It is mainly for removing skunk odors from a dog, a person, there clothing, upholstry, anything. I had to get it the first day i got my dog because i was taking him for a walk and he darted away and i lost grip of the leash and he attacked a skunk. hehehe, what fond memories, anyway, it says on the bottle you can use if for urine too. It gets rid of stains and it smells nice too.

Fabreeze works sometimes but only on the top layer. Go to PETCO or whatever the pet store near you is called , they have a urine nuetralizer that will work all the way thru to the pad. I haven't tried any black light for that.

my dog had 9 puppies. we steam cleaned the carpet, scrubbed the carpets, put baking soda and vinegar in a spray bottle, pretty much everything on the market.... nothing really works to get the carpets "really" clean. The ammonia smell will not go away. We had to rip up our carpets and replace them. very expensive but well worth it.

To the best of my knowledge the only way you are going to get rid of the smell is remove the flooring, as dog urine smell for ever as they use it in open areas to mark their territory.all sprays and stuff only mask the smell temporary, also another reason why landlords do not allow pets
