First, check with the religious director of the parents of the child. Ask what the requirements and obligations of a godparent are.
I believe that you must promise to see that the child is raised in the religious belief of the parents, should they pass away before the child is 18 years of age. I don't think you'd have to promise to be financially or in any other way responsible for the child...though how you could influence the child's religion without adopting him would be a good question to ask.

When I was a child I was catholic and had 2 God Parents. They were not man and wife. One was my mother's sister, the other my mother's brother. I never fully understood it all. For instance, I called my God-mother Nan Nan. The other children in the family circle called her Aunt Emily. Parents didn't explain that sort of thing to children. It was between adults.

I personally think parents should talk a whole lot more about a lot of things to their children. No one is born knowing anything. A child is a blank slate. Parents who don't keep that slate filled with good and great stuff shouldn't be surprised when the child goes off on the wrong path.

But I digress...go back to the top of this meander and do that. :)

yes a simgle woman can be a Godmother - but yes there does need to be a Godfather. my brother and I are Godarents to one of my nephews -- he's married, I'm not. I'm also Godmother to other nephews and friends children with other friends. so yes, quite plain and simple:
1) a single woman CAn be a godmother
2) yes there needs to be a Godfather (who can be married to someone else or single too.)

3) someone posted that you would care for the child in the event of the parents death - this is not the case. the godparent is there to aid in the spiritual upbinging of the child and supporting the parents in their faith. whle you CAN be the person they choose to care for their child - that's an entirely seperate matter.

Of course!

Depending on the church that the child/person is going to be baptized, a prospective Godparent is supposed to attend an indoctrination class [or seminar] to know all the requirements and duties of a Godparent.

Peace be with you.

Sure. Happens all of the time. Having "one of each" is preferable - but not necessary.

Only a few requirements:

1) Vow to raise the child as a Christian (you don't particularly need to be a Christian yourself, but I certainly prefer it...and

2) You must be willing to take these vows (or similar ones) in the child's name:

¶ When the Office is used for Children, the Minister shall speak unto the Godfathers and Godmothers on this wise.

DEARLY beloved, ye have brought this Child here to be baptized; ye have prayed that our Lord Jesus Christ would vouchsafe to receive him, to release him from sin, to sanctify him with the Holy Ghost, to give him the kingdom of heaven, and everlasting life.

Dost thou, therefore, in the name of this Child, renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow, nor be led by them?

Answer. I renounce them all; and, by God’s help, will endeavor not to follow, nor be led by them.

Minister. Dost thou believe all the Articles of the Christian Faith, as contained in the Apostles’ Creed?

Answer. I do.

Minister. Wilt thou be baptized in this Faith?

Answer. That is my desire.

Minister. Wilt thou then obediently keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of thy life?

Answer. I will, by God’s help.

Minister. Having now, in the name of this Child, made these promises, will ye also on your part take heed that he learn the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments, and all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe, to his soul’s health?

Answer. I will, by God’s help.

Minister. Will ye take heed that this Child he brought to the Bishop to he confirmed by him, so soon as he is sufficiently instructed?

Answer. I will, God being my helper.

In the Catholic Church, you have to be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church is all. You do not have to be married. I think you do need a Godfather though but, it could be someone else totally but with the same credentials.

Of course she can..........
Actually i have been the grandmother of my baby cousin when i was single...
The only a woman need is to share the religion, have been baptized herself and to accept to care about he/she, if something happens to the parents.
Sometimes, that changes a bit from one place to another. You better ask to your priest., but basically, is the same everywhere.

Are you serious, you can be single to be both. Why would you need to be married to do such a thing? Have you even been educated on the subject of Godparents?
