I am getting a maltipoo who will grow to about 4pounds. I was wondering what is the best way to house train him. I have been told it is not good to take him outside until all his shots are complete. So, is it a good idea to train him to use puppy pads until later on and then possibly train him to go outside. I have heard about this product called "wizdog".

Also, I have been told to let the puppy stay in a toddler play pen, while I am away and also for him to sleep there. Any ideas about that?

crate or kennel your pup, they are fine with it! Take your puppy out VERY frequently, like every hour or so. Obviously you can't do this when your gone or sleeping, so this is when you crate them. Don't feed or water to close to bed time. As your pup grws, so does it's bladder strength. Take your puppy for mwalks, avoiding other dogs until shots are concluded. If you live near a doggie park, when shots are concluded, make the doggie park a regular part of your day. Your dog will be a happy social pet. And your floors will look great!

Never head of not letting them out til they have all their shots, but they are a small dog. To house train, the best way is every time they eat, drink, or wake up from sleep, you need to take them outside. And once in he middle of the night. I never had any luck with those puppy pads. As for a playpen, Guess that would work. A kennel would do the same thing, and probably cheaper.

i have a maltese and yorkie . maltese are very smart but can be stubborn as babies. the pads are good but not for long. ive learned that once they get used to the pads they feell as if any matt or carpet in the house will look like a pad for them. In the beggining it is good for the puppie to sleep in the cage so he learns where his place is however as he gets older, it is ok for u to leave the cage open at nights. it is important that after the puupie gets a little older that u do take him on walks every so often because they start to feel like the pad is the place to go but really its just for training.
