Lee Valley Hardware online store would have rod magnets that are 3/8 inch in diameter. They are rare earth magnets, which I guess means that they are extremely strong. They usually ship in a couple days.
Alternatively you could try a veterinarian or an animal feed store. The magnet that you are describing is about the same sized magnet that they feed to cattle. These magnets sit in the cows cut and prevent any scrap metal such as staples that they pick up while grazing from going into their intestines.

I have all kinds of magnets but none of them are that long. My husband and father used to work at a magnet factory in Nebraska. The ones that didn't pass inspection they brought home. You might try a craft store or a hardware store. Good luck.
