my sister has been bugging me for the answer to this question all week so i thought id ask it here. i just wanna know how long it takes sunscreen to start working.
for example, if you apply it at 11 o clock will it start working to a certain extent immediately or do you have to wait for a few minutes before it actually starts protecting you from the uv rays? ive heard you shud apply it 20 mins before you go out. but i jst want to know if it has any effect before those 20 minutes are over.

Sunscreen is like putting on an invisible shirt - it starts protecting your skin right away.
But if you go in the water or sweat a lot, it sort of washes off and you have to apply more to keep the same protection.
Also, it sort of wears off during the day even if you don't sweat or get wet, so you need to apply more every 2 or 3 hours.

Sunscreen is effective as soon as you put it on. The 20 minute rule you are thinking about is actually 30 minutes and it refers to getting in the water. Even the "waterproof" sunscreens will wash right off if you don't wait 30 minutes before going into the water.
