My Cousin put up a bigass shelving unit in the middle of her rectangular studio. It Reached almost across the space, sudo door way kinda thing. TV and seats on one side bed on the other.

I am renting...and my house is covered in holes which I made...! When you pull everything down again, just fill the holes, you can get putty type filler and poke it in with a spoon if you must! That said, you could hang an opaque curtain from a pole across the room, or a bead curtain, or a chain curtain, or roller blind/s.
And yes, there are some great cube type room dividers you can buy (ikea, argos, homebase etc), which have storage space in them for books and stuff, and will still be useful if you move.
I love the japanese screen idea above.

Get a divider and use a nice table or a plant to cause the space to have a look where there are two separate spaces.

i had the same problem while living in a bedsit years ago - i couldnt put up anything permanent or 'put holes in the walls' etc...So i found a 'japanese stlye screen' and pulled it across open and closed whenever i wanted...it was great because it was lightweight enough to take with me when i was moving house and i still have it...
You know the ones...the 'paper' style screens you see in japanese housing all the time...and i covered a few of the panels myself with material with a jap stlye print on it to brighten things up - it looked dead cosy!

Some form of screen should do it.
As for the holes, as long as you or a more experienced friend fills them back in before you vacate the place, your landlord should be cool.
