How about you call the vet back and ask the vet exactly what you should do for the open wound. The vet would have better advice on how to treat an animal better than anyone on yahoo answers.

Antibiotic ointment won't worsen the sore, but the dog will probably just lick it off. Cleaning the area with soap and water, and maybe some alcohol will help keep it from getting infected. Don't use peroxide, it will make the sore worse. Peroxide will damage the skin around the wound. Peroxide should only be used on a wound if there is dirt in it and you can't get it out any other way, it will not help protect the wound from infection. Call the vet's office again and ask them what you should do. Chances are they'll tell you to bring the dog in. But if you know that isn't necessary treat at home like anyone does for their own wounds.

Redawg ... peroxide and alcohol are certainly NOT the same thing

Peroxide is an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (HOOH or H2O2) sold for use as a disinfectant or mild bleach.

Ethanol CH3OH (alcohol) is often used as an antiseptic, to disinfect the skin before injections are given, often along with iodine. Ethanol-based soaps are now becoming commonplace within restaurants and are particularly convenient as they do not require drying due to the volatility of the molecule.

Will you be mixing your peroxide with some cola, or serving on the rocks

Go to the vet so they can sell you a visit and a tube of neosporin.
If it is a small superfical sore I would treat it myself. I believe in vets but I also believe in taking simple things on myself.

lady g...alcohol and peroxide are the same thing...duh. Peroxide will cause more damage cause it will eat away any formation of a scab. The only difference between alcohol and peroxide is the sting...they both do the same thing.

Like I said, they do the same thing...disinfect!
