Although the mouth of a typical dog is full of bacteria, it's "species specific." So, if a dog were to lick a person, most of the germs wouldn't transfer. "Bottom line -- you're more likely to get a serious illness from kissing a person than kissing a dog."

It's not that it is "cleaner" per se. It is that a human being's mouth is one of the most bacteria ridden on the planet. Dogs do not transmit germs through their mouth (unless they have rabies or distemper and most are immunized against this). Whereas a human being's mouth has so many different types of harmful bacteria always in it normally, that if you were to be bitten by a person and the bite broke the skin, you would have to go to the doctors and be put on antibiotics.

I have heard that it is, but just can't believe it. Think about it. A dog grooms themselves with their tongue. They lick parts of their bodies to clean them. Think about that!!!! Most dogs have at least one flea on their body, so they might be licking up flea droppings. Ewww! They use their paws (nails) to scratch their bodies & then lick their paws. Their paws have also walked all over the house, which is clean, but what about when they go outside for a walk? There paws have to get dirty and they don't exactly know how to wipe off their paws on the throw rug like we do with our feet. Well, I am just kind of comparing & don't know how this could be.

Oh, I forgot one thing. I used to have a cat. I still have the dog. Well, my dog would always eat the cats business from the kitty liter when we weren't looking. Of course, we were looking, because we actually saw her do it. She just didn't know we were. Had to get rid of the liter and put the cat outside because she wouldn't stop eating it. So, no, my dog's mouth is not cleaner than mine.

NO. Dog's mouths are disgusting. There's some weird folklore that dogs have some kind of antiseptic spit, or it's antibacterial or something. I guess the idea was that since dogs lick their wounds, and the wounds heal up faster (since they debride the wound and keep it moist), then the dog's saliva must be magically delicious.

But I see my dog licking her butt and her cha-cha on a regular basis, as well as her paws (she grooms like a cat--weird and annoying, especially when she gets hairballs), and none of those things are clean.

I just read this book Fearsome Fauna about parasites that live in the human body. Dogs can pass you parasites not only in their poo, but also in their SPIT. Dog saliva can have PARASITES in it! Nasty, nasty, nasty!

But humans have disgusting mouths, too. Don't get me wrong. It's not exactly a sterile room in there. But dogs have slightly grosser mouths than humans.

Unless you lick your butt like a dog. Then, I guess you could kiss your dog all you wanted.

I've never heard my dog curse or say a bad word about anyone.
Seriously though, I think generally it is, but I do think it depends on what either species has just put in it.

My dog doesn't use foul language. So I would say YES, they do have cleaner mouths.

I've heard that all my life, but how can it be true when you see what a dog eats, licks and chews on.
