A n00b was a computer gaming term -- spelt original as "newb" --that initially refered to someone who was new to a game in particular, or gaming in general. The word later became used in non-gaming contexts, in which the original meaning is more likely to preserved. Though this meaning is still used today at times in gaming, the term "newbie" is generally reserved for the original meaning of "newb", while terms like "n00b" or "nub" have shifted in meaning from someone who is new to a derogatory term used to refer to someone who cheats, hacks, uses game tactics considered "exploits", uses childish (though usually effective) gaming methods, is stupid or selfish, or an insult leveled against experienced gamers which basically means "you suck".
An example of the modern use of "n00b": in some first person, team based, shooter games there is a tactic called "spawn camping" in which a player stands in an area where members of the opposite team reappear in the game and kills them before they even have a chance to respond. Someone might describe this player as a "n00b" in that they are racking up a terrific score, but are using what are percieved to be unfair tactics to do so.
Good luck!

Hey IHATEcomm...,
I think what you have is a 'newbie', or someone that just started in some group.
