Both my parents and stepdad graduated from UC Berkeley. Does that give me a better chance of getting into UC Berkeley as a freshman for the 07-08 school year?

I hope so, b/c my 3.7 GPA unweighted (4.15 weighted) and 2070 SAT scores are on the lower spectrum of UC Berkeley acceptance i think.

Oh and if having parents from UC Berkeley does help, how much does it help?

No it does not; since Berkeley is a state funded school, legacy is not considered in the admission process.

Focus on your personal statement. Your essay is the most important component of your application, then grades, then test scores.

Having alumni parents will help. I don't want to scare you, but a 3.7 GPA isn't that great for Berkeley. The valedictorian at my old high school in the Bay Area was on the wait list for Berkeley. He eventually got in, but if you have valedictorians on the wait list, you might have a tougher time getting in with your GPA. I would apply anyway. Your parents being alumni might help. Good luck!

Colleges are supposed to look at each student objectively so having both parents as alumni of the school you are applying to shouldn't make a difference. However, if you mention it to the admissions people, it might help to tip the scales in your favor. As far as how much it helps, that is not something that can be measured.

first off, let me just say you're a lucky bastard. now that i said that, I'd have to say that if i were you, i would go to UCLA. both schools are incredible, i know, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't UCLA a public school? it's cheaper, it has more exciting sports teams, and it's located in one of the most exciting cities in the world! As far as academics are concerned. i think Berkley has a slight edge over UCLA, but not enough to base your decision solely on the universities' national rankings. Either school you choose will help your chances of getting in to a great grad school, i have no doubt of that. good luck!

heck yes it will help. but you will not get boosted in only on that. the only thing being related to alumnae will do for you is get you put on the top of the stack to be looked at, so to speak - it will not make you a better student or person.keep trying hard.

If your parents are alumni, that might help. I don't think you will have any problems getting in with your GPA
