Because telling parents their child has ADHD is much easier (and sells more drugs for the drug companies) then telling parents that they need to provide consistent discipline with their children and stop giving them everything 'they never had'. Not parent blaming here, most just feel too guilty to discipline because they want their kids to be happy and like them.
Not to mention that kids are bombarded with TV and video games, which are highly stimulating and then they are expected to go and sit still in classrooms.
And don't even get me started on the things that kids are eating these days. There is no way a body can function and think and learn filled with highly processed, sugary foods.
Instead of drugging our children, society needs a wake-up call. Then maybe any actual cases of ADHD can be identified and not passed off as 'the fad diagnosis'.

ADHD receives so much attention because it is misunderstood. A lot of kids are on medications that are debatable and that makes it a hot topic for people to talk about. I was diagnosed at one point with adhd and knew that it was wrong, i just couldn't concentrate for a couple of week sbecause of other things that were going on. The ADHD medication is a schedule II medication and that makes everyone wonder why we are prescribing medication that is highly addictive to children, and whether or not we are starting a kid off in a life of addiction/dependency.

It is a big deal because classrooms have too many students and too few teachers. It is a big deal because unrecognized ADD/ADHD or untreated ADD/ADHD usually leads to self-medication thru the use of street drugs and alcohol. The drugs used to treat ADD/ADHD are not addictive to people who need them and use them properly...
It is indeed at levels unseen before. That is because of more definitive diagnostic procedures...it is generally seen as an inherited condition and by that I mean genetic not based on what the mother and/or father did...It is NOT poor parenting, it is NOT lack of attention in the home, it is NOT due to children being spoiled or neglected...it is Not because of poor diet...It has never been linked definitively to parents use of drugs...
It is also often misdiagnosed and waaaaaay to many children are given drugs rather than given an opportunity to proceed in their own fashion. Stress is the mindkiller and it is particularly bad for anyone with ADD/ADHD. It makes the symptoms worse and that leads to more stress...

because schools ,doctors and parents today think ALL kids have it !!!!kids used to get long recesses, play games, have gymn every day and play outside or ride bikes after school.now, gymn is once or twice a week, and u can take things that require little effort.recesses are shorter,or cut altogether, and active games are not as encouraged.kids sit behind desks most of the day, then have more hours of homework than i ever did, then they play computer games-all sitting down,no or little outdoor excercise.after awhile, this sedentary lifestyle makes some kids into obese couch potatoes, others are so sick of constantly sitting still that they just start to bounce off the walls.some kids probably do have a neurological problem, but too often,at least in this school district, kids are required to stay still behind a desk or computrer for hours-most kids, especially boys, NEED more physical activities.not long ago, kids were allowed to be kids, and allowed to move.now they are expected to be quiet, miniature adults, conctent to spend all day in sedentary pursuits.the kids cant sit still-cause their kids !!!!! anyone who doesnt conform is drugged into submission.almost all my friends have a child or several children,on ritalin !are we supposed to believe that the world has changed so much in 30 years or so,that almost all children have suddenly developed a problem that was rare a short time ago ? if so,what happened ?

I think people are just looking for something to blame their problems on. Don't get me wrong, i'm sure there are some children and adults with do have it, but i also think it is overdiagnosed when the doctor just wants to make someone happy and gives them a name for what may be either physical or psychologically wrong with them. some people can't handle the reality that they may have a problem and need a "shrink" to help them, so the doctor calls it add or adhd, they get a pill and go home. problem solved! easy right?

it is very frequently occuring and previously has been under-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed as bi-polar or other.
it is a epidemic from parental drug abuse, cigarette smoking and alchohol whch may cause it in babies of such mothers.
it also may be genetic or have a genetic pre-disposition if certain triggers are met.
it affects adults and children and never goes away and causes a lot of pain and messed up lives. it is not a mental disorder but a brain malfunction so the patients who have it feel better to know they are not crazy but have a wiring problem in the brain.
people commit suicide from dispair. they lose jobs and spouses and flunk school etc etc etc. ADHD is serious and treatable but you must get a modern doctor to help you

For children ADHD is something the school tells you your child has to get them on medicine and make them little zombies most of the meds will do this to children...how do i know cause that is what the school has told me for years and i have obsearved the class room without my child knowing i am there and seen what goes on he is just bored...if they would give him harder work more of a challenge then we wouldnt have the problems
