A drinkwell water fountain. It circulates and purifys water so that cats have a constant supply of fresh water, you only need to clean min once a week & I have noticed my cats drinking more because of it. Its also funny to watch them engrossed in the running water. I searched the internet and found one for £30

We have multiple cats, and the best thing I can recommend is the "Cat Sitter" DVD. They also make a VHS version, but it's not as long, won't auto-loop, and the tape will wear out. They sell at most pet stores for around $10. It's really amazing - they will sit and watch the video of the fish, hamsters, squirrels, etc. for hours - great for when the pets are home alone.
Another idea is a laser pointer. Our cats are insane for that thing too.

A good idea for a gift is a sweater or a fuzzy toy that moves mechanically like a mouse

Catnip doesn't work on my cat, or she ignores it or something. I've tried many times. So I just got her a wind up mouse last year. She loves them. She totally murdered that one, so I think i'll get her another one, and some really special treats.

Definitely cat nip, cats love cat nip. You can just give it to them strait or put in it a bag, close it up and watch them play with it.
