It usually looks nicer to have a rug under the dining room table.

A rug in a dining room adds elegance and comfort. I'd say go for it!

I think rugs help keep the floors clean ' wood/ carpet.
If you have a lot of company or kids it is good to keep spilled drinks and food from carpets and wood.
It is your choice.
And if wood floors rugs are warm for the feet..

I don't see a safety problem with it. In fact I have seen it done. The only problem is if you use and expensive rug, it will probably be spilled on.

I think they look great. We don't have one there because my parents are both almost 90, and we're afraid they might stumble on it. Something to consider regarding your regular guest list.

Not practical, if you like clean, I like to clean up after dinner & not have to vacuum.

i wouldn't its not very clean and hygienic also you will be forever washing food out of it!
