diddo what "jvitne" said. They are, however, awaiting resurrection according to God's promise, who are living in His memory, during the millennium.

Jesus said the same thing about Lazarus, so that his apostles thought he meant Lazarus was sleeping( JOhn 11; 11 - 14
U must be using the verses at Ecclesiastes 9; 5 and 10.
to answer your question, what happens when your asleep (besides dreaming of course) or before u were born? Nothing, it's like your not there. When Adam sinned, God did not promise him heaven or hell, He just said " Dust you are and to dust you will return." That's why the resurection is mentioned in the Bible several times. It is man's chance to live again, which is a gift from God. If people had immortal souls, there would be no need for a resurrection.
Jesus did promise his followers that they would be rulers with him( Luke 22; 29) There is also a new heavens and a new earth promised at 2 Peter 3; 13. Also read about what will happen to death and Hades at Revelation 20; 13 and 14.

Why do you take one modern English word (dead), and ignore the Hebrew from which it comes, and then apply the one definition to every verse of a translation, while ignoring the many different Hebrew and Greek words used throughout the scriptures, to make a false statement? In other words, why do you insist on changing what the Bible says in order to force it to fit your own preconceived theology? Isn't false support the same as no support at all? Aren't manipulated references the same as no references at all? And as far as using Ecclesiastes 9:5 to say that "the dead know nothing," why at the same time do you ignore Matthew 17:3, "And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him (Jesus). So tell me, how is it that Jesus talked with men who, according to you, were "dead" (and had been for over a thousand years!) and therefore knew nothing? You see, one doesn't even have to know Hebrew or Greek to understand the scriptures, one only needs to understand context. So the very Bible you used to support your false claim at the same time condemns it.

I would look at it in context...
some statements like this from Job or Eccliesiastes might be from the point of view of the wisdom of man... under the sun weverything is vanity..but when you rise above with the Son you get a different perspective
Psalm 115:17
The dead do not praise the LORD,nor do any who go down into silence.
depends what it means... the dead no longer can speak prase to the living... so it depends
and to muddy the waters further..
"I am the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob...God is not the God of the dead but of the living" Jesus speaking about Abraham Isaac and Jacob in a sense NOT DEAD BUT LIVING
there is more than meets the eye

Not being any biblical scholar, I wouldn't know if there was anything in the Bible saying that or not. But I sure don't recall seeing any dead bodies that looked "awake" to me, and they sure didn't look like they were remembering or feeling a thing.

It would be good to quote the reference. There are verses that say pretty much the same from the book of Job...but just because someone says something in the bible does NOT mean that we accept it as true. There are many many examples of people saying things that are contrary to God's will and law, etc.

The body dies and turns to dust.
Dust is an inanimate substance.
We know from the words of Christ that the dead are not truly dead, but alive ... as spiritual beings in heaven with God ... or in hell with the devils ... as God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
On judgment day, we'll all receive brand new resurrection bodies much like the body Jesus already posesses.

The Bible compares being dead with being asleep. You have to look deeper than just the physical meaning of being "dead". Many times in the Bible when it refers to someone being dead they are simply walking around using only their five senses rather than letting God lead them. Those that are dead are not physically dead but spiritually dead. So they can also be said to be asleep.
1Cor 15:18-20
[18] Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
[19] If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
[20] But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
Also reference is made to the five senses:
John 4:18 [18] For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
The five husbands represent our five senses. We should rather have Christ as our "bridgegroom" (then the five senses) since his chruch is his bride. Again we are talking spiritually here and not physically. When we only use our five sense to guide us, we are dead. Just like Adam and Eve did not instantly physicaly die when they ate of the bad tree, but did spiritually die, which is even worse. The process of becoming physical is how the spirit is said to "die". The spirit is dead in the flesh until we awake and realize it is in us, and let it live through us.
Now we should awake in Christ.
Romans 13:11 [11] And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
1Corintians 15:34 [34] Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
Ephesians 5:14 [14] Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
The Bible is clear that we need to awake to Christ. This is the only way that I can understand how the day of the Lord comes like a theif in the night. Well, the only way you will be aware that he has come of course is to (how do you know a theif has come in the night?) WAKE UP to the spirit.
John 4:24 [24] God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

How do you expect someone to correctly answer your question when you dont give more information in that question. Where in the bible does it say that, so we can give you an answer according to the word of God. My bible search engine comes up with absolutely nothing pertianing to this question.

Let us view that scriptures at Ecclesiastes 9:5: “For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, niether have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten." (ASV)
It means that they are "dead". They cease of all functions of life. After breathing, heartbeat, and brain activity stop, the life-force gradually ceases to function in body cells. Death is the opposite of life.
Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts [“thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “all his thinking,” NE; “plans,” RS, NAB] do perish.”
Notice Jesus reactions when his friend lazarus had died. At John 11:11-14: “‘Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.’ . . . Jesus said to them outspokenly: ‘Lazarus has died.’” (Also Psalm 13:3)
