If a matter has to be justified it is generally wrong. In the past Christians did smoke and drink, but those who were prepared to make a stand so that they were not conforming to this world, shunned not only tobacco and alcohol but also entertainment and even, in some cases, political affiliations.
There are a number of factors that play. If one says, 'It's all right if' that is what I mean by justifying it and it is probably not all right
If others are aware the Christians abstain then it is wisest to abstain
If you are worried about getting reprimanded at the judgement the Lord will probably pick out a more serious defect
If you know Christians who are smoking and drinking you may either rebuke or shun them. It is not given to everyone to rebuke
If you have a problem and being Christian does not stop us from being human then seek help. Your Church should be able to do this for you.
But if you had just wanted the short answer then, No it is not.

Even Christ drank. The key is moderation. I agree with Kaye. Also, I would think part of the answer would depend on what you do while you are drinking. As for smoking, I smoke like a freight train. It is horrible for you, but that doesn't mean that I am any less a christian than the next guy. No one but you can make decisions for you. Only you know how your relationship with God and Christ is.

A Christian should not get drunk, and certainly not engage in worship while drunk. Otherwise it is a matter of personal faith. The Bible says let no-one judge you according to meat and drink (Colossians 2). As a person walks with The Holy Spirit, so they will make changes in their life by their own volition in order to get closer to God.

Smoking is bad because it pollutes the body with semi-permanent effects. A Christian would not want to do this. Drinking alcohol is not so bad as long as it's done in moderation. Jesus first miracle was to turn water into wine and wine was used in the last meal he had with his disciples. However drunkenness is bad as it can lead to unruly behaviour and/or addiction. If a Christian has or has had a problem with alcohol, it might be wise to prayerfully consider giving it up completely.

Smoking is stupid.
On drinking I'm with Benjamin Franklin: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy".
Jesus' first miracle was turnong water into wine. Think about God's attitide to drink: He made the stuff so people could have a good time at a wedding! Yeast used to be called "Godisgood" in medeaval England and you'd be hard pushed to find better booze than that produced by our monastic bretheren: Trappist beers, Chartreuse and Benedictine (hard pushed, but not impossible - I give you "London Pride" the goldstandard of cask conditioned ales).
If you feel bad about standing before God with a hangover (personally I feel bad about standing per se with a hangover) I have a couple of tips:
- Drink very good drinks, good wine, real ale, malt whisky.. Drink for the pleasure of the drink and the company not to get as off your face as possible.
- Go to bed sober, or at least not "fully drunk" (trust me this works)

Drinking and smoking have nothing to do with being a Christian...drunkeness should not be acceptable nor should addiction...it is not what is on the outside that defiles a person but what is on the inside.

Sorry, Sylvestre, yet i do now not think of you frustration would be resolved quickly, as that's a ingredient of the human challenge to be inconsistent, in spite of what your faith one subscribes to. You point out smoking (which admittedly is between the vilest conduct a individual can take exhilaration in) and ingesting as examples of issues that harm the physique and are subsequently a sin. i'd be extra indignant via the actuality that Christians enhance, very own and technique the tabacco and that different Christians manufacture it into cigarettes. all in favour of earnings. So what if tens of millions are addicted? There mindset is "nicely, no person's have been given a gun at their head making them smoke!" fantastically self-serving and hypocritical. What appropriate to the great overeating it particularly is endemic throughout the time of this u . s . a .? and not a number of the main non secular Christians fall into this type. those human beings stampeding the all-you-can-eat buffets? they are Christian overwhelmingly. apparently, "gluttony" is a sin, while smoking isn't indexed as such. What appropriate to the Christians mindlessly using a 10 mpg SUV from procuring mall to mall parking zone? the international's oil factors will final perpetually? i do now not think of so. it particularly is now not purely an attack on our bodies as temples because of the emissions and such, however the "temple" we call "earth," as nicely. It additionally makes us based on our enemies for our "drug of selection" petroleum, which we are of course keen to spill blood over. In a consumerist society, the place all and sundry is flush with money and tedium, they'll do as they want. you ought to prepare consistency and not assume others to stick on your common, in any different case you would be very dissappointed, and specific lonely. make specific to "think of globally and act domestically."

You can trawl through the Bible all you want but you will not find do not Drink or do not smoke, indeed it is recorded that Jesus turned water into wine and that he was at a wedding feast when he did it. Do Not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain and do not pretend that it is Gods will that we neither drink nor vote.

Christian means follower of Christ and Christ turned water to wine so he obviously didn't object to people drinking alcohol, drunkeness is a different matter, Christians should try (as much as is possibly human) to copy Christ but, as we are all human we are doomed to failure. So, to answer your question, Christians shouldn't smoke or get drunk but many do.

Smoking and drinking is a personal choice. The bible didn't condemn drinking, and cigarettes hadn't even been invented yet. They only had wine and water to drink back then, and the water wasn't any good. It also says that you can have whatever you want in moderation.
