You could say that, but you'd also have to say it about a lot of other things. In this case, there's another (less confrontational) word for brainwashing - it's called tradition, and most people on the planet are subjected to it from a very early age. Whether your values are the product of a firm belief in religion, Marxism, free market capitalism, consumerism, or relativist humanism, chances are you didn't come up with these theories by yourself, but absorbed them from the people and society that surround you.
For those who ardently wish to see the world rid of religion, as if it would mean the end of all injustice, hatred and war - it's useful to look closely at historical examples of where religion actually was outlawed by the state: like Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany, and modern day utopias like N.Korea and Cuba.

You do realize that not all religious people started off that way. We are not all products of our upbringing and not all of us "blame" our childhoods for how we turned out. Some of us actually take responsibility for our own beliefs and actions as adults. While it's true that a culture can define your traditions and beliefs, we are now living in a much more connected world. The Middle East is not as far away as it use to be. People have moved and relocated so many times. New ideas, religions, cultures are just a click away on the internet.

Well i was born and raised in Scotland and my parents always taught me when you grow up you choose your religion for yourself(they where not of any denomination). Which at the grand old age of 34 i did. And i CHOSE to become a Muslim. I was never brain washed in my childhood in fact quiet the opposite. We had family friends, neighbors who where Protestant, Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Catholics, Muslims and even Jewish. See that's what happens when you grow up with an open mind in a multicultural society like i did. So i have to say on both counts, childhood brainwashing and geography you are wrong.......But way to go with the generalization and stereotype.....that never gets old.

That's true. When a persons parents begin to teach them religion at an early age, it gets forced into them and engraved into their brains.
They had no choice, and were brainwashed for the rest of their lives... Luckily there are a few who were born with higher reasoning skills, and manage to free themselves from the mental prison they were put into when they were young.

This is so obvious that it gets over looked most of the time. Sometimes the best place to hide a thing is in plain sight.

On the contrary, I grew up in a very secular family, and found religion later in life.

YES, but not just religious people. God believers also.
The problem is brainwashed people are too brainwashed to realized they're brainwashed.
Anybody that believes their skydaddy sent his son down to get beat, tortured and murdered just so Christians can beat, torture and murder someone else, repent and go to heaven, HAS TO BE BRAINWASHED TO THE POINT OF INSANITY

You have a point but no that is not true; I personally have no effects and I would not call it "brainwashing" per se
