At what age do you start letting a small child (boy, in my case) wipe himself after going #2 I know he will have to learn before he starts PK but its such a messy job, I just prefer to do it myself as long as I can to make sure he is clean (tushey AND hands) His parents are of little help!

Signed,
A loving babysitter

I used to have the kids try to wipe themselves, they have to learn. BUT it's VERY important to check and make sure they got clean otherwise sore bottoms and dirty underwear will be a big problem!
SO that said what I did with our kids was have them wipe with a flushable wipe and then we did the bendover and let me see check to make sure they were clean. If they weren't it was oops... you missed, I would then wipe, then we would flush and wash our hands together... eventually they didn't need the bendover and check but it helped teach them to ensure you wipe until you are clean. This childs parents are VERY lucky to have such a caring babysitter.

I would let him do it and offer to help if he doesn't get it all, and make sure that he's washing his hands well afterward. Let him do that for himself also with supervision. Kids need to learn to do things for themselves. I know it may be more convienient for the caregiver to do it for them because it's quicker or less messy, but that doesn't help the child learn independance with these tasks. The parents are on the right track as long as they are still supervising bathroom visits and helping when needed. Good thing that he has a great babysitter though. Not many out there care that much. Thumbs up to you for caring!!

I have a son who is now six. He did want to wipe him self right up to the age of four.I new that he had to start soon because the teachers wouldn't do it when he started school. I began by standing with him in the bathroom and letting him do it him self ,and checking that he did a good job when he was done.show him how to was his hands well ,even if you have to get some fun kids soap.I didn't take long after that, less than a month.just be patient and persistent.

The little guy still needs assistance, and unfortunately some children never do quite get the hand of it, as is evident from the big guys skids on their underwear. You just let him, and check to see how he is doing. Offer wipes to help get the job done. You are doing all you can, and good job with monitoring the hand washing. Bless you for caring.

Practice makes perfect. I think at around 3 years of age, a child should be able to wipe themselves. Granted, not all little ones are able to do it ... but, most are. A little supervision, for the first little while is all that should be needed. As another poster stated, Kandoo wipes are great, when your little one is still "practicing".

Kids are messy and usually have some traces of poop on their bums but it is necessary for them to learn to do it themselves. It is also important to teach them to clean their hands after using the toilet. If his parents are of little help, take the lead from them, they are his parents and they know him better than you do. My son is 2 1/2. He wipes his own bum and then I 'check' to make sure he got most of it off (or he will get a rash). My 4 year old daughter is a pro.

depends on the maturity of the child. I would guess around 4yo. But I know a 5yo that still has trouble sometimes.
Try baby wipes (make sure they go into the trash can).. or if u can get the flushable wipes. They work well.

My son was about 3, let them use like the kandoo wipes or even diaper wipes (they say dont flush diaper wipes though) Do it earlier than later. I baby sat a 7 year old that had never wiped his own and it was very akward for me
