All dogs can be considered "smart" but understanding what the different breeds were intended to do will help you pick one that is right for you. For example, working and herding breeds were bred to work with humans and this can make them easy to train (and therefore seem "smarter"). Any breed can sometimes be driven by their genes. For example, a beagle will sometimes follow their nose and not respond to your commands to "come" - is this "proof" them not being smart or them just doing what they were bred to do??
I currently have two Rough Collies and I have to say that they are some of the "brightest" dogs I've ever met. I taught my female to speak on command in less than 5 minutes and she knows her toys by name and can the one you ask for out of the toy basket. I've also had a Border Collie/Lab mix who was a dream to live with and very intelligent and I swear that the German Shepherd I had growing up could spell...
However, "bright" dogs can often get bored and can destroy your house/belongings. That's why Border Collies often score highest on dog intelligence tests but aren't necessarily recommended for the average owner who can't spend a significant amount of time burning off their physical and intellectual energy.
Good luck.

Poodles believe it or not a re very bright dogs. Sometimes it's a bit hit and miss with German Shepperd's, if you train them from a young age they can be quite good. I had a border collie once and she was to bright. She could open doors to get things she wanted, had selective hearing (or at least that's what the vet said when I took her in), understood everything I said to the point I had to spell things out like differ ant foods and walk so she wouldn't get to excited. Even in some breeds that are know for their intellect you can find a dumb one every now and then.
Best of luck.

Most dogs are. Depends on how much time they spend with you. More inportant is learning about the characteristics of the different breeds & choosing one that will best suit your life style. Know whether are very active & good with children etc. Purebreds are fine but don't overlook the beloved mutts. often are very smart & tolerent. Look up some sites on the internet & read up.

All dogs are extremely smart. If we realized how smart dogs are we would all be surprised. A dumb dog is still smarter than the average human. I've heard that Austrailian Shepards are above average. But then all dogs are above average, you just can't go wrong with any dog you choose.

The smartest and best behaved dog I ever had was a Border Collie. She was gentle, playful, obedient and easy to house train. I had her until she died at almost 13 years old! There are other good breeds too.

what comes to mind it the border collie. but as all dogs they dont come packaged and ready to use. lots of training and hard work is involved along with persistence love and hard work. any dog is smart with the correct training. TRAINING being the essential word.

All, but the most intellengent breeds are Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds. Any breed will only learn as much as his owners teach them.

check the internet and you will find that the most intelligent dogs are the brussel Griffons.I've raised them for several years and they're almost as smart,or smarter than some humans. The Mimi Schnauzer would run in second place .

poodles, german shepherds, collies, jack russel terrier
basenjis are also very smart, but they tend to be free-spirited
if you want a smart dog, avoid a Great Dane or Samoyed
