Exercise helps, but watch what exercise you do and how much you start out with. I took a 9 week yoga class. I felt horrible pain while doing the exercises. Afterwards my muscles would sigh in relief. Sometimes I would hurt for days afterwards.
I've found that I do better with other types of exercise. Walking short distances. Swimming and exercising in a pool for 5-10 minutes.
My friend, who is a fitness instructor, told me to drink plenty of water while exercising and to avoid yoga until my muscles are stronger.
If you have sleeping problems, I'd suggest a good foam or memory foam topper for your mattress. I've been prescribed SSRIs in the past when my sleep problems were at their worst. Sleep clinics can help find out if you have a certain sleeping disorder.
A pain management clinic or specialist might help. Rheumatologists can be good, but some I haven't had luck with.
Support groups like fibrohugs also can help.
Hot showers and soaks in the tub help some. Hot tubs can sometimes be too hot for me, but the ones at the right temp. relax my muscles.
My blood sugar gets low throughout the day, so I keep healthy snacks at work. I also make sure to have protein and two veggies in my dinner.

I use a TENS unit for the pain when it is really bad. I try to weight train and do yoga when possible. I take high dose magnesium and malic acid supplements for muscle spasms. And sometimes, the thing that helps most is a strong drink or two. It's not a habit, but it works a heck of a lot better than any pain meds or muscle relaxants I have tried.

Most people have no idea how painful this problem can be - it's a matter of trial and error to see what combination works for you. I use heat, self-massage, osteopathic treatment, professional massage, orthopedic pillow and mattress. If needed, use a heated bed pad, or blanket when it's flared up. I didn't find that any medications were effective - pain pills will dull it, but not such that it is worth the side effects.

I have fibromyalgia. I have tried chiropractic, massage, cranio-sacral therapy. Now I am having acu-puncture once a week. It helps with the pain. Other things which may help are : magnesium, MSM, multi-vitamin, plenty of good water . Hot showers and/or baths. Exercise in a warm pool. Lots of rest. Walking.
