Additionally, there is a small bump on my lower jaw which hurts when I apply pressure. Also, there is a protrusion on the inside of my lower jaw, where my tooth was. My oral surgeon thinks i have an infection caused by food being in my wound. He has prescribed an antibiotic. Does all this make sense?

THIS PROTRUSION MAY BE A BONY FRAGMENT WHICH MAY ERUPT THROUGH THE GUM.
IF FOOD WAS TRAPPED IN THIS SOCKET WHILE THE HEALING TOOK PLACE, THEN THIS ARE MAY INDEED BE INFECTED. HEALING OVER AN EXTRACTION SITE WOULD NOT BE A "BUMP" BUT RATHER A VOID.
HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE THESE EXTRACTIONG WERE DONE?

When my widom teeth were removed, the surgeon had to cut away some bone in my jaw to extract one of them. I had pain in that area for over a year, even though there was no infection. Apparently it took a long time to heal, internally. Do you know if your jawbone was cut into?

As far as the bump on your lower jaw, it sounds like an abcess. Take the antibiotics your surgeon prescribed and you should be fine.

Hope this helps!

Yup I went through the same thing in August. But I had all 4 teeth cut out. Evil evil evil. I had the lump on the jaw and the protrusion on my lower jaw.

They said it was infection to keep rinsing with salt water and gave me antibiotics. They also gave me a curved syringe to help clean out the hole after I eat.

They also told me that a heating pad or hot water bottle would help the infection drain faster. Also to gently push on the lump every so often to help it drain.

Beware the draining infection will probably make you stomach hurt something awful.

Hope you feel better.

I don't know any adverse health consequences after having wisdom teeth removed. I think you should call your dentist again and get an expedited appointment, saying you are in pain and it's interfering with your work. Make it plain that the analgesic did not solve it, and you have a prognosis. be sure to use the word "prognosis" when you talk to your dentist.

do you have pain when breathing air in your mouth? this can be caused by what they call a dry socket. you can also have pain for some time after a surgery of this kind because if they were embedded in your jaw really deep and had to really use force to remove them that can cause the pain to your jaw, it takes time to have them heal. slowly the pain will disappear but the lump you are talking about might be part of the bone if it broke while having them removed. i had this happen and it can be very painful. have them re-xray it to find out.

Sounds like a job for a Dentist or Doctor. Why on Earth you would you trst some person you don't even know or can't even see to give you medical advice is beyond me. You could be talking to a 9 year old child for all you know. That's why doctors spend half their lives in university, so they can give you the right answers.
