Family dynamics. You can not judge the relationships other people have with their families, and should not try to fix peoples behaviors unless it directly affects you. When he hangs up on you let him know that it is rude and it offends you, but as long as he is exhibiting the rudeness to others, stay out of it. You don't know if his grandmother was abusive to him, or abandoned him, or stole from him or whatever. Just stay out of it, until it is directed toward you, then you can jump in.

Kill him with kindness. You will enjoy watching his reaction to this more than you will his reaction to telling him off. Tell him he seems tense and to let you get him a cup of coffee (but don't you dare ever follow through). Say oh are you having another bad day? "Such angry words for such a nice man TSSK, TSSK."
When he does something really rude. Tell him you'll hold down the fort while he walks off some of that hostility!!! And tell him You wouldn't what him to have a stroke
You get the idea.

I don't think there will be a way to tell him this without upsetting him. Rude people are usually angry people. Either bite the bullet and face the consequences or stay out of it.

I dated a guy once who used to hang up on people. He was in his 40s, and I thought it was very immature.

You can't really tell someone they're rude without them getting mad, unless it's a very close friend, and you're saying it as a heart-to-heart.

Unless he is getting rude with you it's really none of your business and it is rude of you to evesdrop on his conversation with his grandma and it's not your place.

Why is it your job to repair his rudeness? He has a certain right to be a social misfit.
