I am an atheist, but I believe everything is interconnected. I love other people, and try to show compassion towards them. I am a pacifist. I try to lead a moral life, by not harming others (not just literally, also emotionally and indirectly e.g. stealing, lying.)

I'm not trying to be selfish in this question, it just interests me. A friend recently asked someone in my class (a fundamentalist Christian) if she was going to hell, and the fact that this girl could unblinkingly just say 'yes' amazed me.

Other religious people (not just Christians may answer, sure, but there's no point in just sayin 'I don't believe in hell' - I don't either! Just a question for those who do.)

'shanglemon...' yes, I have done anatomy (well to a certain extent - I am squeamish so the actual dissections do not appeal!) and I understand that everything is intricate and it's amazing that we can survive at all. But I attribute that to billions of years, rather than God.
We are all very special, as is the land, the animals and the plants. But I do not believe it is God's work.

It depends what faith your talking to. I'm a fellow atheist, and I think i live a life that would be decent enough to get into the heaven of a reasonable god, if such a character exists. Even within the christian community there are mixed ideas on this. Some people think you have to say you believe in jesus during your life here, some say that you have to admit to him being your god at the gates.

As for the gods of other religions i couldn't really say, I know more about christianity and the Abrahamic gods. The Abrahamic god liked to smite, whereas jesus was more reasonable.

I think being an atheist though you are making a fairly decent assumption that there is no god, the probability in scientific terms leans towards there being no god, so I wouldn't worry at the moment.

Well seeing as how the Christian faith sprang from the Jewish faith, and the Jewish faith does not recognize hell as a real place, then it is most probable that the concept of hell was invented as a means to getting more people into the Christian congregation. I would not sweat it, if hell is a real place then it is probably reserved for the ones who started the lie and those who continue to perpetuate it. Observing the pattern of God's actions in the Bible it sounds like something God would do if he exist, ironic don't you think?

you need help, a pill and a check.. you have to feel the presence of a supreme being. if you believe that we evolved, what made the heart? have you ever taken an anatomy class? the body is intriguing. someone besides man or evolution had to have play in the body. but i also believe because jesus says that he is the way, the truth and the light. i wish i could help you, but if you don't believe jesus, i know theres nothing i can do. good luck in hell. it is your mind that will be in hell, not your body. you will wake up in torment, nothing god made can die, we physically die.

The reason that she could unblinkingly say "yes" is because she understands that the bible is true when the bible says:

John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Romans 11:32
For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Romans 3:10
As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one

In a case like yours, to deserve hell, you would have to have been shown the fulness of the Truth and chosen freely to reject it. Maybe the Christian witness you have come across till now hasn't been very intellectually convincing, or maybe just not particularly Christian!

Technically, we do not go to hell for our beliefs but for the choices we freely make. If you choose to stop searching for Truth (culpable ignorance) then I won't say it's time to shop for asbestos underwear, but I would be concerned.

Keep searching for Truth. That interconnectedness thing is worth pursuing. I'll keep you in the prayers,

I personally find it hard to believe that a God who is loving and just could sentence a person to everlasting torment just for not believing the "right belief." Not saying it's not true, I just find it hard to believe.

I mean, an atheist may not deserve Heaven for not acknowledging God, but I don't really think they deserve to spend eternity smoldering in a lake of fire, either. Heck, I don't think ANYONE deserves that.

NO!
Hell doesn´t exist. A loving God would never create such a place.

The church mistranslated certain words like Sheol and Hades into hell to scare people into staying, respecting or joining so they could have more power.

The only one who knows what will become of you is the Almighty who can see into your heart. Ask him and you will be guided.

I believe the only way not to go to Hell is if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your savior and you've asked for forgiveness of your sins

John 14:6

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
