are you aware that the democrats plan for a change in Iraq involves the reinstatement of the draft? How do you feel about that?

The reason I ask is most people who I meet who are rabidly anti-Bush, are that way because they don't want us involved in the middle east. Yet, the democrats plan to drastically increase our military presence there and to basically force people to join the armed forces and go there. They are obviously preparing to declare war on Iran, Syria, North Korea, possibly Lebanon etc.

My niece just joined the Army for some patriotic reasons to be sure and I am very proud of her for that. But the reasons she told us, her family, were purely economic. She needs a stable income to support her family. Too many of the people risking their lives for your ideology are in Iraq because they thought joining the service was their best choice for navigating a life of hardship. Many if not most of them hoped they would get to spend thier tour in Germany or some island in the pacific. Did you serve in the military? Have you volunteered? Are your children sleeping in a tent in the desert where most of the locals would like you dead? I say its about time all you Republicans that wanted this war and voted for W get off your butts and prove you mean what you say. Actions speak louder than words.

There has been a change in direction already. Rumsfeld is gone. A study group has convened and is being listened to. Investigation into possible impeachment has begun.

Your statement, "They are obviously preparing to declare war on Iran, Syria, North Korea, possibly Lebanon etc." is just stupid.

Let there be a draft. I am in favor of some kind of national service.
It won't need to be military but I doubt very seriously it will happen.
I voted against granting more power to Mr. Bush. Its time to have congressional oversight reinstated and pull in on the reins a bit.
He needed to be checked. As for Mr. Bush's war....well let's just
see what kind of alternatives we can come up with. His Stay-The-Course/ Benchmark mentality is not doing much good.
Anything else might be better. I don't support your alarmist prognosis fo yet a wider war through the Middle East & on to Korea as well. Many Americans would not either.

Nonsense. Charlie Rangel wants to introduce the draft as a way to spread the risk over the whole society for any decision to send our troops into combat. When that happens, everyone will be more involved in the decision making. If you hire your fighting done, you think differently about the fighting than if your own son or daughter will be sent to go do it. Many historians feel that the Roman Empire began to collapse as soon as they went to a mercenary army. With a draft, the whole country needs to feel the decision to fight is intimately in their interest, and the draft forces that commitment. Vietnam was a case in point. That war was somebodies wet dream, and without the support of the whole country, millions of young men said "hell no, we won't go." That refrain was the beginning of the end for Lyndon Johnson as President. The last thing Charlie Rangel wants to do is declare war on Iran, Syria, and North Korea. He knows that most young Americans would not support, nor would their parents, such adventures as Iraq if they had to go themselves. This war is so unpopular that the Pentagon is forced to keep sending the same soldiers back to Iraq, even against what they volunteered for, because the military cannot get enough volunteers. This idea is definitely something for public debate.

It won't do any good complaining about how we're involved in Iraq. The U.S. is already there... Jon Stewart referred to the war as president Bush driving a school bus into a ditch and being unable to get it out.

We must acknowledge that taking out all our troops won't do any good unless the Iraqi military can handle things on their own. If there is a draft then I'll serve my country like Elvis did.

And all politicians lie. We just have to pick the one that lies the least. Bush is supposed to be a conservative, but he has not yet vetoed a single spending bill in his entire term. Sounds like liberal to me.

Charles Rangel has been spouting this idea for awhile now. He knows it is not going anywhere, just throwing it in to make people who think Iraq is the right thing to imagine if their little Johnnie or Jannie was forced to go. He doesn't believe in the idea himself.

NOBODY knows what they're doing in Washington. At this point, NOBODY knows how to end the war in Iraq. Pull out now, we're sending the message we're weak and impotent. But why drag it out, either?? How is this supposed to end?

Shakespeare as usual had the best answer regarding situations of this nature. In Romeo and Juliet he has Mercutio say not once but three times as he is dying,

"A plague o' both your houses ."

Were truer words ever spoken?

Maybe the fact that some of you priveleged white kids used to be able to avoid the draft will make some of you guys (read: republicans) not have such a hard on for war.
