Anyone can give advice. But for it to do any good it must be received. Older people - like any other people - can see that their advice is better received by being serious in their care about others. You must earn the right to be heard.

They do have a vast amount of life experience to guide them. There is no book knowledge that can surpass that. Where they fall short is in failing to stay on top of current issues of today. All knowledge gained by experience can be applied but the wise elder must know how that knowledge can apply to what is going on today. If he/she is living in the past and has no idea about current events the knowledge is pretty useless.
