Young dogs have a very strong chewing instinct, and need to have lots of toys to chew on. They are not aware of what does or does not need to be chewed on. My neighbors dog chewed up a good part of her couch while she was out. . Other dogs, have the urge to dig, up the soil in the yard, and it is unbelievable, if left alone the size or the hole they will dig up. Your vet should give you some ideas as how to get that chewing controlled somewhat, until it is outgrown .If possible try caging the dog with some chewing toys while you are out, to avoid damage.

Dogs really like to chew, and they don't know that your $100 leather shoes aren't really good chew toys!
They key is to keep anything you don't want chewed out of the dog's reach, and keep an eye on your dog when he or she has run of the house. Make sure the dog has plenty of chew toys available, and if you catch him or her chewing on your good stuff, say "no" and substitute the appropriate toy for whatever the dog was chewing on.
You can also purchase "bitter apple" spray that will discourage chewing if sprayed on the items you don't want chewed.
Hope this helps!

Silly enough, people give their dog, dog toys shaped like shoes, yet wonder why they chew on your own shoes?
If a dog knows wrong from right, they might be lonely and trying to get attention.
Get your dog a kong and put treats and nutbutter in it. Or other chew dogs that are just for them.
In the meantime, safe guard the stuff he shouldnt chew. I sprayed vinegar on a pillow and a cat bed my dog liked to chew he never tried it again.

I don't know but if you have a dog that chews then what you can do is in a deep voice say "BAD DOG!!!!" and kind of push the dog away and if you have a puppy that chews its only because it is teathing so still teach it not to chew.

Its not that they know what is important and what is not. Its that you know what is important and what is not. When a dog chews something unimportant you let it slide. However, if it is important you get upset more.

If you handle the item frequently it will have your scent on it. This is especially true for socks and underwear! Give your dog something interesting to chew on like a KONG toy filled with peanut butter. That shuld keep him busy for awhile, probably bored

Because you did not properly supervise your dog or you did not train your dog as to what is appropriate for him to chew. They chew because it gives them pleasure it is up to you to teach what is appropriate and what is not.
