Optical means the glass (lens) is doing the zooming (magnification). Digital means the camera is taking the image the lens is giving it and increasing the magnification through software built into the camera. You should never use the digital zoom unless it absolutely means you would not get the shot because it is going to bad - grainy/noisy. Pictures printed will look fuzzy. You probably will not be happy with it no matter how important it is to you.

Optical zoom is good and digital zoom sucks. Do not EVER take a picture using digital zoom unless you are absolutely desperate and do not have access to a computer or other way to crop the image.

The only good thing about digital zoom is that you can also zoom in while you are reviewing an image you already took, in case you want to see if Auntie Hilda had her left eye closed when you took the family portrait.

Optical zoom is the real zoom from the lens. Digital zoom it is a scam ...its using a software to enlarge a specific area of that photo....so same as you can enlarge it on your computer.
