we,ve had him for 7yrs assume he was at least 3-5 when we got him.I know some may bash this?? and me for asking here @YA but i need someones opinion til i can get money next week to take to vet reguarding what they suggest I know they will say "Put Him Down".I do think it may be that time.So sad though this dog was abused terribly Law Enforcement(here in U.S southern state)Wouldn,t do Anything about it.so i took him from the idiot myself!I don,t have much money then or now.I treated him for wounds but he was never x,rayed.He has been to the vet once,but that was it .I continued wound care, kept up with shots, worming and flea/tick treatmentsLOTS of love & exercise.But now for past 2 wks He is Lame in his hips,front leg.he can hardly get up/go outside(poop) What i want to know is :IF I Have To Put him down myself B4 I can get him to vet what dosage of Morphine/Valuim will put him down @home.He is terrifiede of car ride.I DONT WANT TO DO THIS!But in emergency I NEED to KNOW cuz I LUV him

Sad situation. Call the game warden maybe? Don't ever medicate an animal if you are not a vet or instructed by a vet. You could end up doing more harm than good. I too once took a dog from someone when the authorities didn't do anything. I found a nice home for it with a friend from a different state. So I know sometimes we all bend the rules a bit. I know someone that even took a dog to a vet under an assumed name. I'm not saying these things are right just sometimes necessary. Sorry I cant be of more help. Good Luck.

I think it's wonderful that you gave this dog a good home.
Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing, but you need to take the dog to the vet, so he can perform the euthanization.
Sometimes, vets will make house calls to dogs that really don't like going to the vets. Here's a website to check out: http://www.athomevet.org/
You can also do an internet search for at home vets in your area.
You might be able to get the vet to prescribe you dog a sedative so he can take it before you go to the vets. There's no harm done in just stopping by your vet's office and asking. There's also natural sedatives (Rescue Remedy is one) that you can put in your dogs food. That might calm him down enough so he can go in the car.
Meanwhile, keep your dog warm and comfortable. Don't get upset at him if he can't make it to go outside, and treasure the next week you have with him. You can also give him aspirin for the pain. Call your vet to find out the correct dose.
I'm sorry you are going through this, and I commend you for giving this dog such a wonderful life.

Sorry, but I really don't have an answer for you but I do have to say GOOD JOB for getting that dog out of that abusive home. I would have done the same thing if it were me. Maybe the dog suffered from broken bones at the previous home? Now, the dog may be suffering from not having the injuries taken care of at the other home. The dog may have arthritis now. My understanding is that larger dogs are more apt to getting arthritis and hip displasia. Good luck to you and I commend you for what you have done by saving that poor dog.
Please do take the dog to the vet! They are trained to know what is wrong. Yes, they may say it's the dogs time to go and there is really nothing that they can do. Please, if the dog needs to be put down, let the vet do it, they can do it without doing any harm and it will be done painless.

I am so sorry to hear about your little baby. If you were to do this at home and screw it up....you will have a lot to live with for the rest of your life. Keep the money you would spend on Morphine/Valiums and offer that as a down payment to you local vet. Look in your local phone book for a vet that will come to your house. Call your local Humane Society or Animal Shelter....ask them for help. Ask your family members or friends if they can help you money wise. Ask your boss for an advancement or a loan. Anything!!! But please don't do it yourself. If you don't know what you are doing and obviously you don't....you could end up harming your dog instead of helping him. I know you wouldn't want that. it is hard to lose a pet but if he is in a lot of pain and there is nothing else that can be done about it. take him to the vet and have him put down they will usually let you stay with them. i know you love him but you are just being selfish by letting him suffer and be in more pain, so unless you can afford to have a huge vet bill you really have no choice. also talk to your vet sometimes you can find a really nice one who will do a payment plan with you if your dog can get help.

He could have hip surgery but that's VERY expensive. I don't like to give this advice but if you think about it, your giving an overdoes of sedative. You can't give too much, only too little. So if you have a fair quantity on hand (don't waste your money buying it, if your going to do that use the money to have the SPCA handle him) then use a large dose. I hate for you to do this. Call a vet and tell them what you are going to do and maybe they will do it for you for free. I think giving him a slight sedative would help for the car drive. My heart aches for this poor dog...

I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma and that your dog has had such a tumulteous life.
Don't put your dog down yourself. It may be his time to go, but there are people that will help you and your situation.
Contact your local humane society and explain the situation in full. You may have to surrender your dog but they may be able to help him get better, or make him more comfortable in his passing. They have vets that work for them that would be taking care of this.
Don't be embarassed, or ashamed. You did what you could.
You could up messing up and making him worse. Contact your local shelter (make sure it is NOT a no-kill shelter, or they might let your dog live in agony).

I feel very sad for you it makes me cry to know that this poor beautiful creature has been mistreated and that consequently it will have to be put to sleep. I want you to know that you have given him quality of life and have helped him to live longer than he ever would have if you had not removed him from his previous circumstances and loved him as you have. Some vets will allow you to pay later. If you contact your vet and tell them your circumstances they may come out to you or allow you to collect the dosage of drugs that will put your dog to sleep.
You are a brave lady. I admire you for what you have done and for the love that you have for this animal.

If you love him so much, as I believe you do, take him immediately to a good vet. Don't do anything by yourself. All the unconditional love he gave you during all those years, must be enough for a special and good care now, by a professional. Ask him and hear him.
