All dogs think to one extent or the other, but Border Collies are at the top. After all, herding sheep they have to think on their feet, discern what the sheep are doing, and listen to the human Herder's calls and whistles.
As someone else said, you do have hands full, when my brother's two labs (now about nine years old) were pups they were into everything.
He called them Heckle and Jeckle, after the mischievous black birds (crows) in an old American cartoon.
Life is wonderful with our dogs, however. Wouldn't trade it for anything,

For the same reason that humans are the smartest species on the planet; but sometimes you get one thats not as bright as average. Or cant run as fast. Or isn't as tall.
Just because a breed has a reputation for being smart doesn't mean that all pups born to that breed will be really smart.
The dim ones don't win obediance comps or work on farms. They sometimes make good pets.
But they would never be bred from by someone who wanted to breed smart dogs. Thats how the breed got smarter in the first place.

perhaps the one you think is thick not getting the right stimulation from you, my border collie cross seemed thick but
when i spent the time to teach her a few tricks she picked them up quick, she liked to shake paw, roll over and fetch, we used to play hunt the treat I'd close her in the house then hide some treats in the garden and she'd sniff them out, she also liked to round up all the local kids in the park like they where sheep

They are just individuals. Mine has moments of genius and moments of stupidity ... well, they say that they get like their owners! If it's not a border collie, it's just a dog. :-)
