The people who have to fight and die would have a right to say that. Dead is dead, even if your side won. Winning with your legs blown off may seem a empty victory. Country's win wars not the poor sods who have to get their hands dirty winning them. However sometimes their is no option other than to fight, So show respect to those who do, listen to there opinions, who knows we might get involved in fewer wars

mostly because they did not learn enough history.

The argument is that fighting a war causes moral damage to the winner. However if you are facing a mindless (culturally speaking)enemy, then losing is far worse.
examples? Mongol invasions. Mongols considered (religion of the wind god) that farming and building houses were sinful. No place for any compromise with farmers- as made plain by the anihilation of Beijing, Baghdad, etc.

Considering all, I'd rather win.

I guess they say that because so many people die or are horribly wounded. Other lives are disrupted, never to be the same again. It is a tragic, messy business. But sometimes, unfortunately, necessary. WWII was a necessary war. If we had not fought, Hitler and his henchmen would have taken over much of the world. A very messy business.

It refers to the lives and other things lost during a war, that can't be regained. A war can be decisively won by one side, yet people will still say that.

Because the consequences of one war lead to others ... for example, the end of WW1 let inevitably to WW2, which led to the Cold War, the establishment of the state of Israel, which many believe to be the source of problems in the middle east ... the end of the Cold War led to Bosnia and many other conflicts in the Balkans.

I see the rampant liberals are getting their shot on this. Modern day wars. eg Iraq, bloody shambles but go back 60 years. Us brits had a little issue with these German fellows. I think its safe to day we won that one! If not then id be saying this answer in German.

I think a more accurate way a saying what most people mean by that is "Everyone loses in any war." Unfortunately, going to war is not always a choice. If someone it determined to kill you, you either fight or die.

Because they are idiots. We have been fighting wars since Cain and Abel. If they did not serve a purpose and someones interest was not served, we wouldn't do it.
The victories may often be pyrrhic, but they are victories nonetheless.
Case in point, without a revolution, which the US won, there would be no US to fund the rest of the world or badmouth.
