As can be expected from our Liberal brethren, a senior member of the incoming, democratically controlled, congress is calling for a military draft to be instated.

I, for one, distinctively remember the Dems using the prospect of a draft as ammo in the 2004 presidential race. Seeing this new development, I am actually shocked with myself for not noticing the absence of such rhetoric during the 2006 congressional elections. We now see why. But, I must say that I do believe that every male citizen of the U.S. should be required to serve in the military for at least 2 years. I believe this would give today’s youth a better sense of responsibility and pride in their nationality. My question is this. First, what are your thoughts on required military service? Second, what are your thoughts on this newly proposed draft? And third, how do both make you feel?

The military is not for everyone. The draft should be used only as the last option. I think this is the democrats way of finally destroying the military. They have tried every other way and so far it hasn't worked. This will surely do it.

I'll agree that EVERY male citizen of the USA should have at least 2 to 3 years of Military service or if you are unable to serve the military, then you should serve in
another capacity, such as the medical field, or something
like community service. They will eventually have to have the draft, because this war on terror is similar to the nazis taking power during the "30s and '40s. The all-volunteer military is working real good right now, but we are being stretched to the point of breaking. This is a good idea as far as I am concerned. I have been there and I would serve again in a heartbeat.

1) I have always thought that the US should have a mandatory military service for all, young men as well as young women. Perhaps discipline not taught at home will give the younger people the sense of responsibility. 2) The draft really is not needed but the military brass will have the call. The US needs a way to fix the biggest blunder in its history, Iraq! 3) The first would certainly benefit both the people and the country, military wise. Look at Israel . The second would not affect me personally, but it would my grandchildren, but they can cope with it as my generation did during the draft years. I was not drafted because I voluntarily enlisted after Korea and stayed until after we pulled out of Vietnam.

Maybe I have inside connections, or I just pay more attention to certain issues, as I had known about the purposed draft a few months back.
I am for the draft. Perhaps I wasn't too inclined to appreciate it back in the 60's, as I hadn't wanted those I knew to go to Nam. Wouldn't you know it, hubby enlisted, and pulled 2 tours there.
I have watched my sons join the military, and both served in the Gulf War. I have watched some join, only to punch out the Drill Sergeant, and be asked to leave. I hope this time, boot camp will be as it once was, and not as it is today.
I agree that it will allow our younger people to learn responsibility, and pride, within themselves, and within their country.
We need our Nation Guard home, on these shores, not over seas. We need men, and women, who are willing to fight the wars, and we as a people need to support, respect, and honor those that do.
Maybe we can regain a few of our virtues: human spirit and the content of our character. Both as an individual, and as a people.

Wow, Rangel only wont provide it up. yet I do consider this assertion. there is not any question in my thoughts that this president and this administration could by no skill have invaded Iraq -- fantastically on the flimsy info that modify into provided to the Congress -- if certainly we had a draft and contributors of Congress and the administration concept that their childrens from their communities could be located in harm's way," the ny lawmaker suggested. Rangel is going directly to declare "i'll be introducing that bill as quickly as we start up the hot consultation" of Congress in January. Rangel first proposed legislations for the draft in January 2003 earlier the invasion of Iraq 2 months later, besides the undeniable fact that it exchange into voted down. He lower back did not win help while he reintroduced the bill until now this 300 and sixty 5 days. "i don't see how everybody can help the conflict and not help the draft. i think of to realize this is hypocritical," representative Charles Rangel

This is such BS. If this passes I will literally flush my f-ing passport down the toilet from any other country in this world. I will live in Antartica if I have to, just to be far away from a country that would force people to fight in a war like this. I will never come back. I am shocked that this is happening while the democrats are controlling house. It truly upsets me and makes me sick.

Rangel is not the chairman of instituting a draft. He is part of the board that works on Trade, Oversight, Health, Social Security, Human Resources, and Select Revenue Measures.

There was no national referendum by the Democrats to support this. I agree with you that I believe that a standard number of years of service wouldn't hurt anyone in this country. It might even achieve the goals of Rangel which would stir resentment in the American public over unjust wars. Afghanistan, just. Iraq, unjust.

I live close to Rangel's district, Harlem. And in Harlem, the Bronx, and other poor urban communities, residents are targeted by the military to enlist. It's easier to get them since they have other financial options, but is it right?

There is a prominent "democrat" senator calling for a return of the draft. I am a Republican but wholly support this idea. However, if they bring the draft back there should be NO deferments. All males must serve-including the sons of politicians. Maybe that will make the politicians think twice!

Yes they are. But Republicans would have started it soon anyway. The 2 party system is a joke. All it really accomplishes is keeping people at odds with each other. Divide And Conquer. Maybe that's why they allow so many illegals into the country. They'll draft them. I can't believe it happened out of kindness and goodwill. Can you?

When, to endorse conscription over the volunteer military, Gen. William Westmorland said that he did not want to command "an army of mercenaries," Mr. Milton Friedman piped up and asked, "General, would you rather command an army of slaves?"
