Both.
Very often, I think, they are make-believe. However Jesus cast out demons, the disciples cast out demons, and I think it is still possible (and actually done) today. Like many other supernatural occurrences, it was more common in Jesus' day.
However when religious people make a practise of shouting and shouting at a demon to get out of someone, I can't help thinking it is a make-believe thing, (even though the people themselves may believe in what they are doing). Then again, some people are making money off of it. A real racket.

I sincerely believe it is.In the Penticostal church we call it DELIVERANCE.Jesus did plenty of that in his short ministry of 3years with the promise that his followers would do greater works.
