I had to buy this jar of nutmeg to make an apple pie and now I dont know how else I can use it. What is nutmeg really for...like what types of foods can you use it on? Does anyone know any good recipes that involve nutmeg so maybe I can use this up?

Wow...well, there are so many uses, for sweet and, believe it or not, savory dishes. I suggest making french toast and adding cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract to the milk/egg mixture the bread is soaked in. Or, you can use it like I do, put a little in alfredo sauce for pasta! It gives it that ,"Whats that extra taste?" in dishes, and I think it gives it a unique kick. Or, you can make gingerbread cookies! I think there's a lot of nutmeg in those.
And, next time you buy nutmeg, buy the solid nuts that you need to grate, because you can always freeze the nuts you dont use.

Oh, and eggnog!! LOTS OF EGGNOG!!! Mmmmm.... booze... hehehe!!!

You can also put it in pumpkin pie!

As well, a lot of North-African or Middle-Eastern dishes make good use of nutmeg and oher exotic spices. Check out Epicurious.com for recipes (with and without nutmeg)

A little bit goes a long way...

Spaetzle (German noodles/little dumplings) (about 1/4 tsp per batch)

Eggnog

Baked custard

Baked/mashed winter squashes

Hot milk (along with some sugar and maybe vanilla or a bit of cinnamon)

Try it in some coffee or if you're into it, maybe with some herbal teas.

Put it on a warm dish or in some potpourri and use it as a fragrance

If you eat enough to get sick, you might just get a very mild buzz too - good luck ;->

Keep it in the closet for a year or two for those rare times you might want it, then throw it out...repeat as necessary.

hi. well nutmeg can me used for many things like pies , in some cakes and in desserts. it is also used in flavouring exotic noodles sometime. it can be used in anything 2 every thing . u just need 2 have a mind 2 experiment .it is even used it some icreams which chefs make using spices .It is nice in cheese sauces and is best grated fresh .In Indian cuisine, nutmeg is used almost exclusively in sweets.nutmeg is used especially in potato dishes and in processed meat products; they are also used in soups, sauces and baked goods.Japanese varieties of curry powder include nutmeg as an ingredient.
Nutmeg is a traditional ingredient in mulled cider, mulled wine, and eggnog
. use it like this
Banana Nutmeg Smoothie

1 banana
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated or groung Nutmeg

Combine ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

Serves 2.

Creamed Spinach

2 cups cooked spinach
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoons finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup milk
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

Purée the spinach; add to a skillet with the butter. Add the chopped onion and cook for 1 minute. Add flour and stir mixture until blended. Stir in milk slowly and season with salt, pepper and Morton & Bassett Nutmeg.

Serves 4.


Pumpkin Crème Brulee

5 egg yolks
1 1/2 cups whipping cream
3/4 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
1/4 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Ground Allspice
1/8 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon Ground Ginger (optional)
1/2 cup sugar (you can use light brown sugar if you like a very rich taste)
1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
Extra sugar
Four 6 oz ramekins or Brulee dishes

Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees. Line a shallow baking pan with a kitchen towel. Boil about 5 cups of water and reserve.

In a saucepan, cook the cream over low heat, just until the edges start to bubble. In a large mixing bowl, combine egg yolks, spices, sugar and pumpkin. Slowly add the hot cream. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve (optional). Place the ramekins in to the towel lined baking pan. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. Pour the reserved hot water into the baking pans so that it reaches about halfway up the sides. Cover loosely with foil. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until just set around the edges. Cool the baked custards on a wire rack and then chill. Just before serving, sprinkle each ramekin with about 2 teaspoons sugar (you can use brown sugar if you wish). Using a kitchen torch, move the flame over the surface until the surface melts. Serve immediately.

Serves 2.


Crab Au Gratin

4 crabs, meat only
8 tablespoons butter
8 tablespoons white sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 teaspoon of freshly grated or groung Nutmeg
Pinch of Cayenne Pepper

Place equal parts of crabmeat in four individual oval gratinée baking dishes. Melt butter until clarified and add Morton & Bassett Nutmeg and Morton & Bassett Cayenne Pepper. Pour over crabmeat. Top each with 2 tablespoons of grated cheese. Heat in oven for 10-15 minutes at 350 until cheese is bubbly. Serve with fresh sourdough bread.

Serves 4.

Pumpkin pie or pumpkin bars, eggnog, spice cake, carrot cake, fruitcake, glazed carrots, butternut squash soup, curried chicken, pumpkin bread, butter almond cookies, etc. Look up recipes on the web!

applesause, hot choc. you can put a little into almost anything.
Go in to Food network. and look under Rachel Ray I have a lot of her shows and she puts nutmeg to a lot of different things

basically it is used in spice cakes,apple desserts such as apple pies,and tarts..and also egg nog..You may not use it often unless you bake a lot,but it is a handy item to keep on hand in case you need it.....
