I am wondering this because so many people say it with certainty, but in reality (at least in my opinion) we as mortals cannot fathom what a day is to god. Is this idea right or is it wrong?

Wrong. God created the day for man and surely knows what a day is. He is not bound by time so it is not like a day is 6 months or some weird thing for Him. Also God is not a God of confusion so as to make it so we don't know what He means. If God says one day or One year He speaks to us in a way we understand.

of sourse mortals have no idea how God who invented time experiences time...
you should raise an serious eyebrow when peole make an equation... like... 1 day = 1000 years
the actual verse works both ways...
1 day with man= 1000 years with God
1000 years with man= 1day with God
it would be more reaosnable to conclude God is somehow outside tiem as we experience it in some sense at least
whats short for us may be the same as somethign long to Him..
what long for us may be the same as something short to Him
frankly time runs at different rates in the universe since it slows down with gravity... time might run slower on earth if the earth is in the center of a gravity well in the universe... see Starlight and Time by HUmphreys... but God would still be outside time in His divinity

A thousand years is like one 24 hour day to God- I can't fathom that! But I can read it, so I do believe it :)

wrong,it clearly states in Gods word that one day is like 1thousand days
