No, they would all have to go back to school and learn it. Let American english be the official language.

I'm Italian and in my country the official language of the State is Italian.
But in Italy there are some areas near the northern border of the country (in the Alps) where most of the native people speak German, French and Slovenian: in that areas, the law says that there are TWO official languages, Italian and German or French or Slovenian. But only in that areas.
You could declare American English as official language of the whole country and, for example in California or Texas, declare Spanish too as an official language.
In Italy this was a great way for integration, perhaps it could work in the USA too.
Besides, a country can have more than one official language only.
In Belgium there are two official languages, French and Dutch.
In Spain there are THREE official languages, Spanish for the whole country, Basque and Catalan in the Pays Vascos and in Catalunya.
In Ireland there are two official languages, English and Gaelic.
Anyway, remember that most of the immigrant are now american citizens who work, pay taxes and serve in the Armed Forces but are still part of a minority and a minority deserve to be protected by the State in any country of the world.
Of course they have to learn English, but also their cultural heritage deserve to be protected.

YES! All of the important first documents are written in English. (DofI, BofR, etc...) I know this is the land of the free, but if you want to be free, you should at least be able to communicate with the people here. By making the USA change/add another language to be official, then I feel, as if we're being taken for granted, and being imposed on by a surplus of a type of immigrants that don't care to learn English. There are many people in Europe who speak more than one or two languages, but most of the countries there only have one official language.

Hell, call me lazy, but I don't feel like learning another language to be politically correct.

In my opinion, yes. We should declare American English as the official language of the U.S. Every other country has one or more official language. I've seen far too many times when people from other countries come here and expect us to know their language.

I hate the whole stereotype of dumb Americans. We have brought it on ourselves by our isolationist approach to policy, but I don't like people coming to our country demanding that we speak their language any more than someone from France likes us to go there and expect them to know English.

I think we would have a better standing in the world community if we declared an official language.

Yes. I don't mind other languages and nationalities being a part of the U.S., but English should still be the official language. This was the original language here and is the most frequently used, so it should definitely be the official language.

Yes it should. Just because we have immigrants like every other country does, doesn't mean we shouldn't have our own language. The english language is not only the most common language spoken here, but other than the native americans, the english were the first in America.

Honestly, if immigrants want to come to America, they should speak English! I should NOT have to dial 1 for English!

I thought it was. Last time I checked we were supposed to all be speaking English. Well, Americanized English anyway. I don't think that we should print anything in any other language than English. If you are coming to our country to visit or to live, more power to you. But learn to speak the language first. At least enough to communicate effectively.

I think that it should. This country was founded by the british, our language therefore became for the most part english. I think that we should honor that tradition and maintain our english speaking heritage. If this country's history was dominated by the french or spanish, then i would say that we should speak whatever language came with them. The fact is that most of the people in this country do speak english and we should at least make an effort to maintain that part of our cultue.

English is NOT the Official Language of the USA.

If it was, they would be spelling Flavor "FLAVOUR" and color "COLOUR"

For some reason or another the Yanks don't like the letter U

Maybe the early American typewriters didn't have one?
Or maybe it was a cut back on resources?
Cutting the alphabet down to 25 letters. It must have saved a bomb.
