Most voters polled say they want the troops out of Iraq......Wonder how those people that voted for the democrats to accomplish that feel about the draft coming back????? Now that the democrats have the majority they can over ride a Bush veto .....(remember him the one person that said he would not sign a draft into law)???
At least the democrats can be happy about their majority now!!!

U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives' tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.

Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was still serious about the proposal for a universal draft he raised a couple of years ago, he said, "You bet your life. Underscore serious."

"I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft. I think to do so is hypocritical," Rangel said.

Forgot about the 2/3 to over ride but doesn't take away from the fact - things are really going to hit the fan in January when what the democrats do , goes against what they said to voters. I predict some real fireworks in the near future.

This is pretty much a stunt. Rangel knows that he doesn't have support for this bill in either party. I have no doubt that he indeed does want to institute a draft, but without a real cause I don't see it happening.
The only way we are going to see a draft bill accually go through is if 2 full scale wars happen in the future. Until that happens I really wouldn't worry much about it.
Best thing to do is write your congressman and let them know how much you are against the draft. Trust me I don't think this is a democratic party thing , I think this is a personal thing from Rep Rangel's district.

You are not correct in stating that "Now that the democrats have the majority they can over ride a Bush veto."

It takes a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate to override a Presidential veto. The Democrats don't control 2/3 of either, so they would need help from the Republicans.

Whoever introduces legislation or votes to reinstate the draft would be committing major political suicide. It won't fly.

I think that reinstating the Draft will have the same effect as the the people who protest the draft during the late 60s and early 70s (the Vietnam Conflict). Rangel is an idiot because unless if there is a WW3, there's no chance that the draft can be reinstated.

It will never happen, the otter Democrats won't let it happen...for Congressman Rangel to say that people who support the war but not the draft are hypocrites is laughable...he should seek attention elsewhere...don't forget that most Democrats aren't out there calling for a draft so he will never get enough votes to veto the president's veto...

I highly doubt any legislation would be passed instituting a draft. First of all our borders and national security are relatively secure and there is no chance of invasion by an opposing force. While Iraq is a mess, any attempt at a draft would be met with a major problem. There are enough humans willing to enlist therefore conscriptement would not be necessary. Even though they claim they need more bodies to serve and the enlistment is down, no draft will occur.

Shame, really. When there was outcry that no politician in either house had a child in the military, and therefore, the poor are fighting this war. The draft seemed like the right option.

How about sending Bush to the Middle East and eastern Asia to do some diplomacy? Oddly enough, that's worked recently. Also we allowed middle-eastern nations to discuss how to rebuild and stabilize Iraq and their area. They participated. Why was our government too daft to do that before? Why was anyone who said that there are better ideas out there belittled?

Charlie Rangel is an idiot who knows nothing of the facts of the military. Most of the volunteers are from middle class, not poor families and they are paid well for their service.

Rangel did this once before to make political hay. He thinks by bringing it up it will rile up the anti-war groups, but as in the past, he never votes for his own proposals.

What a waste of taxpayer money keeping this idiot in office.

Charles Rangel is an idiot. I have been on active duty for 18 years now and honestly believe that the draft is the worst thing that could happen to the military. Unless we have WW III it should be out of the question!

Rangel is an idiot. Of course you can support the war and not a draft. The democrats must have some war plans of their own for them to want to bring back the draft. Can you say Darfur?

He propsed it as a class warfare swipe at the Republicans because in Rangle's it is the "poor" that are fighting our wars. So we need to draft the rich, white kids." He's as serious about really reinstituting the draft as Robert Downey, jr. is about giving up drugs. No one takes him seriously.
