Another part of virus protection (and maybe the most important one) is the so-called resident protection (also known as on-access protection). Simply said, it is a program that continuously monitors the entire computer (the operating system and all running programs) and watches for suspicious activities (e.g. execution of a virus), thus avoiding/preventing a virus from damaging files on your computer.

From the very definition of the resident protection, it is clear that most of the time it doesn't require any special care from your side. You don't have to execute it (it activates automatically when you start your computer) and if everything is OK, you won't even notice it is running. Its presence in the system is indicated by a small icon with the avast! symbol (lowercase 'a' in a ball) in the notification area (next to the clock). The second avast! icon, related to VRDB functions (see the help for more information), is also displayed here - as a lowercase 'i' in a ball. These two icons can be co-joined into one should the user feel the need to do so.

Sometimes, it may be practical to either pause the resident task, or maybe change its sensitivity. To do this, you can use the tiny resident control in the avast! simple user interface, by clicking the icon with the resident protection symbol - lowercase 'a'.

More detailed settings can be accessed by double-clicking the avast! taskbar icon.

The turning Icon in your bar means that avast is running and working fine. The color change means that it has found something that needs your attention. Stop and take some time to run a complete system scan to rid your PC of virus. "PEACE"
