Toddler sizes stop at 4T; regular little girls' sizes start at 4 (NOT the same as 4T) and go to 7X. Big girls' sizes start at 7 (slim, if you are looking for jeans) and go to 16, or 16-1/2 plus (some Levis). Depending on her level of patience for trying on clothes, you might want to consider reserving a Saturday (EARLY!!!) for a girls' shopping day, and have her try on clothes in several different brands as sizes are not always consistent from brand to brand and style to style. Plan on an EARLY lunch someplace she likes to go, and home early in the afternoon for naps - for BOTH of you!!! RE websites: if you will visit the websites of your favorite stores, once you have had one or more trying-on sessions, you will find a greater selection and, depending on the store, you should be able to return items which do not fit to the store instead of having to send them back in the mail; just be sure you save your receipts/proof of payment/shipping invoices!
Word of advice on the shopping sessions: DON"T try to go this coming Friday or Saturday, stores will be EXTREMELY crowded and shopping with a toddler will be VERY stressful!

You might be ok with the 4's, XS, or 4/5's. My daughter is 4 and cannot wear the girls size 4 they are long enough but too wide. A friend of mine who used to be a buyer for children's clothes told me that the difference with a 4T and a 4 is mostly length. The 4 is longer. And the 4 is not really slimmer than a 4T, it is most likely the same or a teeny bit slightly wider...but it is made for no diaper wear. It is meant to get more wear thru the year. Ya know? And 6X's are a little wider than a regular 6. Look at their size charts....they will give weight and height measurements and take a guess. I like to shop online at old navy, children's place, jc penney...kohls....because returns are easy--you can do it at the store. There are also Slims out there--Gap carries those. There are also a lot of pants now that have adjustable waists...which help here.
Every manufacturer is different, but here is a STANDARD size chart.
Size - Height (in.) -- Weight (lbs)
Newborn
0-3 mo - up to 22 -- up to 12
3-6 mo - 21 to 24 -- 10 to 15
6-9 mo - 23 to 25 -- 14 to 17
Infant
12 mo - 23 to 27 -- 17 to 21
18 mo - 26 to 30 -- 21 to 25
24 mo - 29 to 33 -- 25 to 29
Toddler
2T - 32 to 34 -- 25 to 29
3T - 34 to 36 -- 29 to 33
4T - 36 to 38 -- 33 to 37
Children
4 - 38 to 40 -- 35 to 39
5 - 40 to 43 -- 39 to 42
6 - 43 to 46 -- 42 to 47
6X - 46 to 48 -- 47 to 54
7 - 48 to 51 -- 54 to 58

my son went from a 5T to a regular 4/5. The 5T is designed to fit a toddlers body shape but the regular sizes when they are diaper free, starting to thin up a bit, lose all those cute baby rolls.
personally i would just get the 4/5. don't that have a measurement section to let you know what weight and height their sizes fit?

the closest size to a 5t would be a 5. although if she is tall, you may want to try a 6 depending on how skinny she is.
also try gap and old navy

The next thing up would be a six. Maybe you can find some stores where the clothing runs smaller in size sixes.
