Here is a site that discusses the Myths and Facts surrounding giving blood.

http://www.lebanonredcross.org/Give_Blood_Facts.htm

People should not donate blood if their lifestyles put them at risk for HIV, hepatitis B, malaria or other infections that can be transmitted through blood.

Being a Homosexual CAN put you in this risk category if the partners involved are NOT monogomous. The Red Cross defers acceptance of blood from donors in this risk group.. even those in monogomous relationships. IV drug users, being a or using prostitutes for sexual intercourse are other donor-risk behaviors.

Other factors that would bar you from giving blood include:

** You have had a recent tattoo.

**You or someone in your family has or had Creuzfeldt-Jakob disease.

** You had an injection of beef insulin made from cattle in the United Kingdom.

**You recently had malaria.

**You have lived in the United Kingdom for more than three months or in Europe for more than six months anytime after 1980.

**You have been treated for syphilis or gonorrhea in the last year.

anyone can give blood, there is no discrimination between heterosexuals and homosexuals in the UK anyway,it all gets screened for everything anyway

as someone else mentioned, the only people that can't give blood are people that know they have certain disorders that can be transmitted or people with medical problems

homosexual people can be infected with HIV (not Aids, HIV is the infection, Aids happens when your immune system breaks down significantly) as much as anybody else can

giving blood is vital and can safe someones life

If you don't want to give blood, that's your prerogative, but one day you just might end up needing some yourself...for example, you may lose too much in childbirth

Anybody, and I mean anybody that does not have a transmutable condition or is not taking a blood altering prescription and is 17 or older and physically capable can donate blood and will be gladly welcomed and thanked for their community effort. As someone who regularly donated blood before being diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, I highly encouraged it.
