Hi

I enjoy photography - taking mostly landscapes and scenery. However, I am very much a beginner, and would appreciate constructive feedback on my photos from other more experienced photographers (no serious critiscism - just constructive feedback!).

Is there such a web-site I could join? Any recommended?

This is a small photography website, but the work of the photographers on here is really good and they are also very helpful and willing to offer feedback on your work.

Ok Firends,

From our research we found that there are mainly two types of websites for photo sharing one is like youtube.com where you dump everything under the sun and share it with the world and the second one is like a pro-site where you put your best shot pictures for review by professional photographers and photo critics. For the ease of use we will call them Cat-1 and Cat-2 respectively. Here is the list of websites which we reviewed:

1. www.pbase.com

This is a Cat-2 site that is for photographers. The charges are:

US$23 yearly for 400 Megabytes of photo storage.
or
US$60 yearly for 1200 Megabytes of photo storage.

Just an FYI, If your photos average 250 kilobytes each, you could store 1600 photos in 400 megabytes. Also they provide trial accounts which are limited to 10 Megabytes of storage space.

2. Flickr.com

Its a comination of Cat-2 and Cat-1 because it has two types of account, free and paid accounts. The free account is very limited as it sets the limit to 20 MB bandwidth per month, But if you ready to pay $24.95/year buy a Pro Account whcih will give you following:

* 2 GB monthly upload limit and
* Unlimited storage
* Unlimited bandwidth
* Unlimited photosets
* Permanent archiving of high-resolution original images

3. www.fotki.com

This is a Cat-1 photo sharing website which gives unlimited photo-storage space.
YOu can do the following;
* Use unlimited photo-storage space
* Enjoy the cheapest photo printing
* Customize your account look and feel
* Find new friends by interests
* Create albums
* Store videos
* Keep blogs
* Participate in photo contests

4. www.photobucket.net

This is again a Cat-1 photo sharing website, the pictures on this site accounts to 70% of the pics shared on myspace.com.

5. www.photo.net

This is a Cat-2 website, that is for photographers. For the free account you can only upload 5 photographs, Once you subscribe (1 year $25.00 OR 3 years$68.00) you can upload unlimited photographs, but again you will have a 20 GB bandwith limit per month(which I think should be more than enough). This is a good site for serious photographers and you can really get good feedback.

Having said all that we think you should do the following to start your journey to photography:

Step - 1
Start uploading your photographs on Cat-1 sites such as Fotki.com, Flickr.com. We would recomend create $25/year account on flickr, this will hep you get a quicker visibility. Analyze all your uploaded photographs such as what kind of pics people like etc etc, do this for 4-5 months and you will get a good feel of people's taste and what photograph can be a hit.

Step - 2
Once you have completed your Step-1, move to Cat-2 sites that is the ones for the pros. Create a paid account on photo.net or pbase.net and start uploading your popular hit photographs from Step-1. I am sure your photographs will definitely catch the eyes of critics and they will provide you the feedback which you looking for.

Hope all that information helps. All the best.

I'm in a similar situation to you although I do mainly portrait work of children.

iStockphoto.com is a good site where your photos are checked for quality and if they pass the approval they are put onto the site and you can get commission from them (not much but its a start!!) I've got $42 in my account!

At least you know then which ones pass the test and people can comment on them. I've just started using Flickr.com as well but haven't had any feedback yet as I've only just signed up :-)

I would recommend http://www.photogalaxy.com . A good place to start is to upload a few of your photos and then head over to their Forum ( http://www.photogalaxy.com/forum ). Often you can't expect to get comments on your photos if you just plonk them on there. However, if you comment on other people's photos then you will find they will be only to happy to comment on yours.
