The claimed "best answer" is only half right. It is not accurate to say pure cane syrup is "like liquid white sugar." That would only be true of simple syrup. Steen's and other traditional southern cane syrups are made by boiling down unrefined cane juice. It has a deep brown color, part of which comes from the natural non-sugar compounds in the juice such as flavinoids, minerals, and chlorophyll. It is, however, much darker than ordinary reduced cane juice, like that from which Demerara whole sugar is crystallized. That is probably due to caramelization occurring during the boiling.

If you are in the UK or on the continent you could probably find Lyle's Golden Syrup. If you are in the USA, you could replace it with corn syrup or with molasses, it will be darker, but it is similar. In Europe you could probably also find spanish Miel de Caña (also molasses) which comes in tins.
There is another thing you could try, cane syrup is often used in making cocktails, you might find it if you go to a liquor store....
Or you could make your own...
Here's a quick recipe:
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
put both in a saucepan bring to a boil and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved...
Allow to cool...and your syrup is ready to use

corn syrup, even dark corn syrup is too sweet, mix it with molasses to make it taste more like cane syrup.
