I just adopted a very under weight rat terrier from the animal shelter yesterday and they spayed her the day before i picked her up, the reason i can tell she is under weight is cause you can see every bone in her poor body,,, my question is what can i feed her to put on weight, i dont want her to be over weight, but she is very under weight and that isnt good either,,, so if someone has ever had a dog that was under weight then please let me know what you fed your dog to put on weight???? Thank you and if you can help me that would be very apperated,,,

Don't feed her a lot of fattening supplements, as it can bring on pancreatitis..but just all she wants of a premium kibble, such as Canidae(my fav) Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, etc..She will gain weight in a healthy manner that way..
congratulations! and God bless you!

Do not feed cat food to your dog. It can cause kidney problems. Just get a high quality dog food and keep the bowl full and available to your pet at all times. Weight will come just give her time. Always feed the same food so make a good choice and try to stick with it. Dogs do not need choices in their diet it make the finicky eaters. Good luck!

My dog was underweight and he would not eat his regular dog food so i had no choice but to feed him what he likes...human food. I fed him hotdogs and other kinds of meat. But i did not feed him the bones. Now he is the perfect weight and now i got him in the habbit of eating his own food and i give him the occational treat. I hope i helped. Good Luck.

If eating a quality dog food every day doesn't work (this is usually all an underweight rescue dog needs), have the dog checked for parasites, worms etc.

Here are some changes that you can incorporate into your life now that will take some weight off, and more importantly keep it off.
Drink more water
Don't drink any soda, even diet soda has a lot of sodium [salt] which will keep water in your body.
Eat more fruits and veggies, less processed food and fatty meat.
Cut out the junk food. Learn more here:

You can try to give her some cottage cheese mixed with her dog food. It will give her calcium, and put on weight. You don't don't want to give her to much dog food at a time. Just a cup or two a day. I feed mine Pedigree. It helped mine gain weight.

Definitely a healthy natural dog food with low fat content is great for natural weight gain. To fatten them up and as a treat, a little cottage cheese works great alone or mixed in with their food!

just give her free choice of a high quality dog food. you really don't need to do anything special. She has just been check out by the vet so she must be doing ok. I'll bet that by the time you take her back to have her sutures removed she looks better.
