That is my all time favorite movie. I have seen it 1234567 freaking times.
The notebook is a story of how to people from entirely different world became to love one another. The notebook is
an epic love story centered around an older man who reads aloud to an older, invalid woman whom he regularly visits. From a faded notebook, the old man's words bring to life the story about a couple who is separated by World War II, and is then passionately reunited, seven years later, after they have taken different paths. Though her memory has faded, his words give her the chance to relive her turbulent youth and the unforgettable love they shared.

I agree with phyandchemteach.
It's a late-life story of a man and his ill wife and flashbacks to younger days - how they met, how they fell in love, etc.
To tell you much more would surely ruin your enjoyment of the movie. It's a 5-star all the way.

It would take too much space to tell the whole story here. Rent it and watch it. I was moved by the story.
