I had to have my Lab (almost 16 years old) put down on friday. I have already hollowed out a duck decoy to put his asshes in so that he can still go duck hunting with me, even if another dog is doing all the work.

I am a funeral director, so I know what I am talking about. The rules and regulations that apply to the disposition cremated human remains, do not apply to those of your dog. You can bury your dogs cremains(ashes) in your back yard. Actually, you have several options, since you can divide the cremains into many small individual sizes. You can bury some in your back yard and sprinkle some in the local river. Why not do both? I have a friend who took her dogs cremains and placed some in their back yard; some in a small urn that they keep in their house. Some was put in a small package that she wants to have put in her casket when she dies ans some were scattered upstate at a farm the dog loved to play at. Do what you feel is right for you and what your dog would have wanted. It is truly loving to see a person who cares so much for their dog as you do!

So sorry to hear about your lab. All of my dogs have been rescue dogs. I have never had a new little puppy. My dog now is about 16 or 17 years old and we've had her for 14 years. All of our rescue dogs were with us for at least 8 years. We loved them dearly as you did yours. We never had any of them cremated. They are all buried in our back yard. If I did have any of them cremated...I would want to put their ashes were they loved best. In your case that's the local river. You don't need ashes or burials in your backyard for memory. He will always be in your heart and never forgotten. Wish you the best.

i'm so sorry to hear about your loss. we also have a lab-they are the most loving and fun dog i've ever had. i don't know if its illegal to bury ashes in your yard. i see nothing wrong with placing ashes in the river where he loved to swim, and then toss the earn in that area. make sure the earn will sink. this is a very difficult and emotional decision to make. if you toss them in the river you can always go there for memories. if you bury them in the yard and then later sell your home they will remain with the property. this is a very hard and my heart goes out to you---
time will heal. i see a new family member in your life soon.

To bury them in the yard is a good solution. The river is also another good solution. There's another alternative: go up on a high mountain, and gently let the wind blow them away.

Do want you think is right, if he loved it there then put his ashes there...it would be the respectful thing to do. Do what your heart tells you because he was your dog:)

I bought a beautifully carved wood box and put my dogs ashes and his collar in it. It sits on shelf next to my favorite picture of him. My husband took his dogs ashes to our woods and buried them. He did place a picture of Queenie next to Mumfords picture and ashes. It is a personal choice. I just needed to know that wherever I went Mumford would go too.
