Okay, I have a fever of 104 for the last three days. My glands are very swollen, I have a headache and body aches and I slept for eleven hours today. Also much sinus congestion. Yesterday my sister's blood test came back positive for mono, and she has to stay in the nurse's office for recess at school every day. She has all my symptoms.

My throat is so swollen I can barely swallow and it's getting more and more hard to breathe. I have work in a few hours, however, I am leaving for the hospital right now. I can barely move and my last day of work, I kept falling asleep. I have had previous attendance issues. Do you think that if I show I have mono, they will excuse it? I don't like missing work but I feel so sick.

Thanks.

I'm sorry you don't feel well and I hope this turns out to be something else, but if it IS mono, you and your employer have a responsibility to protect your co-workers. And if you work with the public, you could literally become a serious health risk for others in your community.

Call your manager/supervisor, explain that you are concerned about your attendance record and recognize that this will not improve the situation, but based on your sister's diagnosis, you suspect you also have mono and you trust they will agree that this must be treated carefully.

I can say with 100% certainty that they will not want you in the office if it's mono.

Feel better, follow doctor's orders and good luck in managing your situation with your supervisor.

One of the best ways to detect mono is to check the glands on the back of your neck - behind and below your ears. If there is swelling in those glands you most likely have mono.

And I hate to say this but if your sister has it, there is a good chance you have it too.

Miss work - hey, you've got bigger problems then worrying about missing work - Mono is (as you probably know by this time ) not a fun illness and it is NOT something to fool around with. Your spleen will be affected by this disease and if you don't take care of yourself during the course of the illness, you could wind up in the hospital having your spleen removed.

Follow your doctors orders to the letter.

If you bring in a note from the hospital, they should excuse you. If you have mono, you should not be around other people because you can spread the disease. I hope that your sister is no longer contagious if she is being allowed to go to school. I also know that the danger from mono is not over once you are feeling better. This is why your sister is not allowed outside for recess. Too much physical activity can cause serious problems. I hope your job is not a strenuous one. If it is, given your previous attendance issues, you may want to get a different one since you will be missing alot of work. If it is not strenuous, you can return to work once you are feeling better.

They may not excuse it but be sure to get a doctor's note. If you are admitted to the hospital, have one of the nurses call your boss and let them know what is going on with you.
If you do get fired from your job, then you will probably be able to collect unemployment for this. It really depends on the state that you live in as far as the rules go.
Hey, another thing, if you need to know anything about mono, you may e-mail me. I had mono and almost died from it. I was the 1st person in 5 years to be hospitalized in my area with it.
Hope you feel better.

You have to take care of mono and yourself first! My son was off work several weeks after contracting this illness. Once you have it...it can come back on you if you allow yourself to get run down. So even once your symptoms are gone...it is essential that you get proper rest and eat healthy
