Verbal : you first ask the patient if he wants to know about his illness. Than you try to let him know a little more at a time and see how he reacts. Try to tell the patient that the disease is serious... that there is some treatment (but it won't cure it...) ... all that before mentioning the word cancer, because after you tell the patient that, he won't hear a thing.
Nonverbal: try to stay close to him (a touch on his knee there might needed, or another way to comfort him...)

Tell them straight out. After all the test results came back, we found you have lung cancer. Then explain that it isn't a death sentence. Explain that with surgery and chemo and radiation that the patient could make a full recovery.
Been there done that.

i think that if that was me and i had to tell someone they had lung cancer just for something for school, ill say no because it happens in real life and you might upset someone who knows someone with cancer. i think your school should do something else for the interview eg job interview that would help you in life.
my grandad died for lung cancer last year and i would give the school a piece of my mind for using cancer for a stupid interview.

MY doctor has told me that I have Leukemia, and that is not a joke. I find your question very offensive to me because you are playing a game and I am not. I don't know how long I have to live, I make every day happen and I don't need to smoke Marijuana.(if you smoke it ,learn how to spell it.) Cancer is a terrible disease and shame on you for making fun.

Straight out.
Your test results are back and they show that you have lung cancer.
Then tell what the options are for treatment.

In this situation you really have to put yourself in the role of the patient.
How would you want to be told?
I know how I would want it. Straight out, because if I were there, I would already have suspected something.

You have to be honest but sensible and supportive at the same time. There's never an easy way to say something like that.
