Hypochondria is obsessive preoccupation with the possibility of becoming ill or with imagined symptoms of an illness (Psychiatry).

Hypochondria is a belief that real or imagined physical symptoms are signs of a serious illness, despite medical reassurance and other evidence to the contrary. A person suffering from hypochondria is preoccupied with physical health and has an unrealistic fear of serious disease well out of proportion to the actual risk. There is no specific cause of hypochondria, and it occurs in men and women with equal frequency.

Symptoms
* Preoccupation with fear of illness
* Persistent fear of having a serious illness despite medical reassurance
* Misinterpretation of symptoms
* Symptoms that may shift and change
* Symptoms that may be vague or specific
* No apparent physical disorder that can account for symptoms
* Disturbance lasting for at least 6 months (24 weeks)

Hypochondria (the people diagnosed with this are called hypochondriacs) is a physcological disorder in which the person continually thinks that they may be getting sick or have a serious disease. They believe that when the doctors tell them they are ok, that the doctors are just not seeing whats wrong and many times they will go out and seek a second opinion.
I'm not to sure that there is a cure for hypochondriacs but i do know of one treatment that has been done. This is where they have a gateway physician. This person acts as the middle man between the hypochondriac and the doctor. The ill person would first contact the gateway physician before going to the doctor and the hope is that he is able to talk them out of it.
Hope this helps?

I have a sister-in-law with this condition. She's self-diagnosed all kinds of "would-be problems" including a brain tumor. It's frustrating listening to it, but I guess she can't help it. She's also a compulsive worrier (about anything and everything) so we've just learned to accept it.

It's a condition where people believe they are getting sick or have an illness. They will often exaggerate any symptoms they may have by fearing that it's something life-threatening.
