Flea collars dont work well and kitty doesnt like being confined with a collar. I love Advantage or FrontLine(outdoor cats) which you apply the base of the neck once a month. Waterproof and starts to work immediately and prevents fleas from coming back. WEll worth the cost. Get from your Vet since it is guaranteed. Use on kittens 8 weeks and older and 9lbs and under. Good luck!

Take that collar of this minute. It's not good for the cat and it doesn't work anyway. The fleas just move to the other end of the kitten. Ask the vet if your kitten is old enough for Revolution. The flea comb and soapy water trick works well too.
Why not make this an indoor cat. Lucy C. Tabby (my cat) is an indoor cat and she has never had fleas. Cats that get out and associate with strays and (god forbid) dogs, get fleas.

Flea collars KILL things so they should not be put on your kitten. I believe at eight weeks they can have the topical flea treatment - Advantage or Frontline. Get it from the vet.
Put the flea collar in the vacuum cleaner bag. It will kill any adult fleas or eggs you suck up in the cleaner. If the kitten is very young you can bathe it in Dawn dishwashing soap to drown most of the fleas. Then use a flea comb three or four times a day to get the rest of the fleas off of it. If you heat a mug of water in the micro to boiling or almost you can comb through the kitten and dunk the comb immediately into the hot water. That kills them too.

Actually it's not a good idea to ever put a flea collar on a kitten or a cat.
First, because a lot of cats/kittens dogs/puppies have adverse reactions to the collar...in fact in some cases they can actually case death.
If it's a small kitten the best thing to do would be to get a fine tooth comb and a bowl of soapy water...dip the comb in the water and comb all over the kitten to remove the fleas...the take a wash cloth with warm soapy water on it and give the kitten a bath...make sure you dry it off...tiny kittens can get very sick very quickly.
If it is over four months old, it's worth it to spend the extra $20 or so and get Frontline...that's what I use on my cats and they've never had problems.

Flea collars aren't really the best protection against fleas. They will kill fleas around the cat's neck, but not over the rest of the body. Try Frontline or Advantage flea medications that you can put between their shoulders once a month.
But, to answer your question, collars shouldn't go on any earlier than 6 months.

actually it could even kill them...
in recent years it has been proven that flea collars have killed many cats, dogs, pups, and kittens.. the poisonsed used have adverse effects on some animals which leads to death
they are not every effective at treating an animal anyhow..
I would suggest a flea comb, flea bath or flea powder.. or a treatment from the vet!!
cats with fleas can get tape worms from the fleas...sounds weird but its true
vaccumm and wash all cat bedding

You should NEVER use a flea collar on ANY cat/kitten of ANY age. They are worthless and worse then that they are dangerous to use.
You should NEVER use any OTC flea product on your cat/kitten including collars. They can cause neurological problems, seizures and death. I can't tel lyou the number of dogs and cats we've seen at the hospital with burns, seizures, serious neurological problems because of OTC flea products and also the pets that die because of their use.
THROW THAT COLLAR AWAY and go to the vet office to pick up a safe effective flea treatment for your kitten.

HI there...the person above me is correct about this fact. Here's a website which documents the dangers of over the counter flea products/collars that are very harmful:
Hartz victims: http://www.hartzvictims.org/
Please consider using the one drop flea products by either Frontline, Advantage or Revolution which have been much safer and can be purchased through a vet or 1-800-Pet Meds: http://www.1800petmeds.com/cat.asp?LV=10

Flea collars are toxic and can make your cat ill, even to the point of death. Get some Advantage or Revolution from your vet. It really works.

it is best not to use flea collars as they can cuase burns to the cat's necks. Go to your vet and get Advantage. It can safely be used on kittens as young as 12 weeks. Also, Dawn Dishsoap will kill fleas on cats. DO NOT use any Zodiac products on cats! They have killed quite a few animals and are pure poison!
