Whether its around the corner or halfway around the world, guests pay for their own transportation and any neccessary lodging.
It is commonplace for the bride or her parents to negotiate with a hotel or two for a block of rooms at a special rate, but guests still bear the cost.

Well, for the celebrities that were invited, I doubt that Tom & Katie paid for them, since they all could afford anything themselves. However, I did hear that Tom & Katie did arrange for a private jet to fly their closest celebrity friends, such as J.Lo & Marc Anthony, Will & Jada Smith, etc., to Rome and I don't know if it was a coincidence or what, but all of the celebrities stayed at the same hotel, so I guess there's a possibility that Tom may have "treated" their friends to the wedding. As for their less famous friends and family, I am sure they helped paid, if not paid entirely, for their trip and stay too. Tom/Katie are rich enough, so why not?? I am sure that if they really wanted specific guests to be there for their wedding, then they more than likely offered to pay for them to attend. For example, they most likely paid for their parents and siblings to attend the wedding of the decade! It just makes sense that way.

I would imagine that they chartered flights for their guest's and arranged accommodations. Normally the guest would be paying their own way, with group discounts that the host's have arranged in advanced, but I doubt this was the case with tomkat's, they wanted to ensure security, so they made all arrangements and footed the bill.

Traditionally the grooms parents pay for the travel expenses and lodging. As for tomkats wedding, most of the wedding party has jets and as for the hotels, tom probably paid.

The guests pay for all of their own accommodations...any destination wedding is the same way, regardless of whether or not it is a celebrity's wedding.

Celebrities do everything for FREE. EVERYWHERE.
They are god's chosen people and therefore someone else
always picks up the tab. If you don't believe me, read Michael J.
Fox's autobiography, He's just as confused about it as you are.
