There are breeds in other parts of the world not recognized by the AKC that are huge - all in the Mastiff family. The generally accepted answer in the US is Irish Wolfhound. This is rated by overall size per the breed's STANDARD, though. The largest individual dog on record may be another breed. Like this: http://www.mastiff.com.au/about_the_mastiff.htm

The Old English Mastiff is the LARGEST breed of dog in the world .
.They can weigh anywhere from 110 pounds to the 343 pounds. Zorba,an English mastiff ,held the world record of the world's largest dog. Although most Mastiff males weigh around 160-230 pounds and females around 120-190 pounds. The height of a mastiff can range from 25 inches at the shoulder to 36 inches .
The Irish Wolf Hound and Great Dane can be taller then the mastiff , but do not match the mastiff for weight and over all size .

The Mastiff is the biggest dog in the world, the average weight for them is between 175-220 lbs and some still get bigger. The biggest matiff recorded to date is 300 lbs. Thats why they are the worlds biggest. Look at the genus book and i garantee the biggest dog will be a mastiff.

The tallest is the Irish Wolfhound, which standing on its hind legs can stand over 6ft, and the heaviest is the Old English Mastiff, which can weigh well over 200lbs. Both of these dogs belong to the Giant breeds which includes Newfoundlands, Great Danes, Great Pyrenees and St. Bernards (there's probably more but I don't know about them).
These dogs are truly your "gentle giants" and their hearts are as big as they are. Unfortunately, they do not live long, with a life expectancy of only 6-8 years. I had to put down my Old English Mastiff when he was 5 due to cancer.

Great Danes and Saint Bernards: Danes for height, and the Saint Bernards for sheer mass.
There are other dogs that come very close, though.
